DUMP THE PUMP DAY WHEREAS, National Dump the Pump Day was established in 2006 to encourage use of public transit and beat high gas prices; and WHEREAS, This year, the Community Transportation Association of Idaho (CTAI) has joined the American Public Transportation Association, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Moscow Valley Transit, and other public transportation systems across the country in recognizing June 21 as National Dump the Pump Day; and WHEREAS, Riding the bus saves money, protects the environment, reduces dependence on foreign oil, lessens traffic congestion, and improves access and mobility; and WHEREAS, According to the American Public Transportation Association, every dollar invested in public transportation generates $4 in economic returns; and WHEREAS, Free local bus service by Moscow Valley Transit is complemented by Dial-a-Ride service, the City’s commuter Van Pool, the Vandal Access Shuttle, inter-city transit by Northwestern Trailways, a volunteer driver program, development of an integrated multi-modal transportation plan, improvements to bicycle-pedestrian infrastructure, and the soon-to-be-realized intermodal transit center; and WHEREAS, Demands on public transportation in Moscow continue to grow, with Moscow Valley Transit reporting an increase of ridership of 96% between 2007 and 2011; and WHEREAS, In 2011, Moscow Valley Transit provided 165,850 fixed-route rides and 10,100 on Dial-a-Ride service; NOW, THEREFORE, I Nancy Chaney, Mayor for the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2012 as DUMP THE PUMP DAY in Moscow, and I encourage citizens to take the bus, carpool, walk, or bike to work, school, play, and errands on that day.
