PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: the health of our community's people is the foundation for a caring and productive society, and our future rests with our ability to adequately treat, and ultimately find cures for, individuals who are afflicted with a variety of illnesses including pulmonary hypertension; WHEREAS: pulmonary hypertension is a chronic, life-threatening lung disease marked by elevated blood pressure in the lungs; WHEREAS: without treatment, pulmonary hypertension patients live an average of 2.8 years past diagnosis; WHEREAS: multiple treatments are available for pulmonary hypertension but it takes patients an average of nearly 3 years go be accurately diagnosed. This delay in diagnosis has not changed in the past twenty years; WHEREAS: pulmonary hypertension patients who are diagnosed earlier have a longer life expectancy; WHEREAS: education can help with early diagnosis and funding for research can help find a cure; WHEREAS: the Pulmonary Hypertension Association is a nonprofit organization that seeks ways to prevent and cure pulmonary hypertension, and to provide hope for the PH community through support, education, advocacy and awareness; WHEREAS: the Inland Northwest Pulmonary Hypertension Support Group provides help, support, and information about this terminal disease affecting patients, families, medical professionals and the health care delivery system in Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana, our citizens directly dealing with this debilitating condition and is working with the newly established medical school, the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University, Spokane to address the diagnosis, treatment and research for a cure for Pulmonary Hypertension; NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Lambert, Mayor of the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim November 2016 to be PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH and urge all the citizens of the County or City to recognize the seriousness of this disease and the meritorious work of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to find a cure.
