Day of Play Day Proclamation WHEREAS, September 24th marks the 8th Annual Worldwide Day of Play, promoted by children’s television programmers, the White House, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, the National Park Foundation, and others around the globe; and WHEREAS, The theme of this year’s event is, "Get Up, Get Out and Go Play!"; and WHEREAS, Play reduces stress, kindles optimism, renews perspective, inspires creativity, and refreshes one’s ability to accomplish work; and WHEREAS, A formally-designated Day of Play empowers kids and encourages community members to get outdoors and engage in healthful, fun recreational activities; and WHEREAS, Along with balanced and nutritious diets, it is important to encourage children and adults to be physically active, to increase awareness and otherwise combat obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, high cholesterol, and other problems associated with sedentary lifestyles; and WHEREAS, Moscow is a proud member of “Let’s Move! Cities and Towns,” championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation; and WHEREAS, Moscow has established an Active Living Task Force, to facilitate development of infrastructure such as Complete Streets, to encourage non-motorized transportation choices; and WHEREAS, Moscow participates in the safe Routes to School Program, Bike for Life activities, Parks and Recreation offerings, University of Idaho Health Fair, Employee Wellness Program, maintenance and development of regional bicycle trails; and other such efforts; and WHEREAS, the 8th Annual Worldwide Day of Play is open to everyone, to encourage a large and diverse group of participants; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor for the City of Moscow, Idaho, do hereby proclaim September 24, 2011 as Day of Play Day in Moscow, and I urge all residents and visitors to "Get Up, Get Out and Go Play!"
