PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: Public health, including curing and treating illness, is the foundation for a caring and productive society; and WHEREAS: Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a serious chronic illness, marked by elevated blood pressure in the arteries between the heart and lungs; and WHEREAS: Historically, that disorder has been considered incurable, with a poor survival rate; and WHEREAS: Early diagnosis can lead to early treatment and the potential for prolonging and improving quality of life; and WHEREAS: Awareness through education can help facilitate early diagnosis and inspire more research funding; and WHEREAS: The nonprofit Pulmonary Hypertension Association is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with pulmonary hypertension through education, research, member services, and patient and family support; and WHEREAS: The Inland Northwest Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Support Group conducts meetings throughout Western Montana, Northern Idaho, and Eastern Washington to assist patients, the medical community, and others interested in the care and support of those afflicted with that disease; and WHEREAS: Medical personnel continue to improve the accuracy and promptness of diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension; and WHEREAS: Moscow residents are among those who have been diagnosed with this condition; NOW THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor of the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim November 2010 to be PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH and urge all citizens to become aware of the seriousness of this disease, the importance of accurate and prompt diagnosis, and the meritorious work being done by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to help find a cure.
