NATIONAL PET WEEK PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the AVMA Auxiliary in celebration of the human‐ animal bond, to promote responsible pet ownership and increase public awareness of veterinary medicine; and WHEREAS, National Pet Week has become widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world; and WHEREAS, The 2008 theme for National Pet Week is “Pets – The Spice of Life,” and focuses on pet ownership, recognition of the human‐animal bond, and public awareness of veterinary medicine; and WHEREAS, One of the world’s premier veterinary teaching hospitals is eight short miles away at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington; and WHEREAS, The City of Moscow recognizes the emotional and physical health benefits that companion animals and service animals provide to their owners every day; and WHEREAS, The City of Moscow values its partnerships with local organizations such as the Humane Society of the Palouse in sheltering and finding new homes for abandoned animals and promoting responsible pet ownership within our community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor of the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim May 3rd – 9th as: National Pet Week in the City of Moscow, and urge all citizens to support and promote responsible pet ownership and the human‐animal bond.
