Poverty on the Palouse - February 16, 2011 • Intros • Identify Issues o Medical Care – Access Dental and Medical Checkups required for Head Start Non-citizens, eligibility are factors o Housing – lack of funding for assistance o Entire county relies on Moscow based agencies o Where are jobs? Where are business members? Ageism o Part–time jobs can pay some or all bills. o Option for volunteering or labor hours? o Understanding scope of issues. o People give to specific needs o Public awareness o Communication o Gaps Addiction services, rehab facilities and cost Long-term mental health facilities Lack of insurance counseling services Child care subsidies Basic medical needs, prescriptions Transportation • Erratic use and availability of • Goal and Purpose • Develop Mission Statement o To coordinate resources to provide individuals, families and community members with effective and comprehensive solutions to social problems in order for them to fulfill their potential and achieve a higher state of well-being. We will endeavor to help people become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically well, and spiritually alive. o To coordinate programs of participating social aid organizations so as to avoid wasteful duplication and to a means of constructively working together to serve the citizens of Moscow. o To more effectively serve the needs of people in Latah County who live in and/or who feel alienated from the larger community. Through the coordination of services offered by social aid agreement, we will strive to help these individuals and families improve their health, financial independence, spiritual worth, sense of well-being, and recognition of worth by the greater community. • Advocacy o Steve Bonnar Sojourners Alliance turned away 4 families in one day.
