The Historic Statehouse Murals Committee and the Idaho Commission on the Arts selected Dana Boussard’s “A Legend of Dreams: The Idaho Historic Statehouse Murals” for the Idaho State Centennial commission. Comprised of six panels, they were installed on the fourth floor of the Idaho Statehouse in 1993 where they remained on display until 2007. In 2007, the murals were removed from the Statehouse by the Idaho State Historical Society for the Capitol Project. Over the next two years, the original Capitol building structure was restored to its 1920s neoclassical interpretation, including restoration of the fourth floor skylights. With the original fourth floor placement, the Statehouse Murals were exposed to direct sunlight and a new location for their display was required. The new location needed to be an appropriate space that stylistically complemented the size, scale, and look of the Statehouse Murals. The Idaho State Historical Society and the Idaho State Capitol Commission, in collaboration with the Idaho Commission on the Arts found the Idaho Commons building at the University of Idaho to meet all these requirements. As a state educational institution with a strong tie and commitment to visual art through its College of Art and Architecture, the University of Idaho is an ideal match for the Statehouse Murals. is brought to you by: Moscow Chamber of Commerce Brochure design by Melissa Rockwood, Rdesign June 18, 2010 Opening receptions: on Friday, June 18 with 67 businesses and more than110 artists Friendship Square events: Friday, June 18 from noon to 10pm Art and craft demonstrations, children’s chalk art, music, and food 2010 Cover Artist: Tom Garfield has been a Moscow, ID resident for over 30 years. The top band is a timeline that tells a symbolic narrative of Idaho’s history from the first people to the present, tying the regions together, capturing the people’s story and the significant events which have brought them to the present. Idaho’s landscape forms her personality - the mountains, the water, and the land are reflected in the middle band of the three murals. The North exemplifies lakes and forests; the Southwest - rivers and canyons, and the Southeast - mountains and deserts. The bottom band chronicles the natural and environmental events that have played a critical role in the development of each area. Some of these symbols overlap the regional boundaries but primarily they show the major influences that affect each of the three regions of Idaho. – Dana Boussard About the Artist Dana Boussard is a nationally recognized artist known for her large scale works of art. Her artwork has been displayed in museums, galleries, and public spaces throughout the United State and abroad. Boussard’s artistic style and imagery are inspired by her deep appreciation for the West. She lives in Montana and was commissioned to create the Idaho Statehouse Murals after a regional competition.
