4-H PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, 4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in Idaho, with more than 34,000 participants; WHEREAS, More than 6.5 million youth, aged 5-18, participate in 4-H nationwide; and WHEREAS, 4-H is administered by a division of the United States Department of Agriculture; and WHEREAS, 4-H participants learn citizenship, leadership, confidence, and life skills; and WHEREAS, The official symbol for 4-H is a green four-leaf clover with a white on each leaf, representing head, heart, hands, and health; and WHEREAS, The first 4-H club in Idaho began in Lemhi County in 1912, one century ago this year; and WHEREAS, In 1923, the first 4-H short course took place on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow; and WHEREAS, The land-grant mission of the University of Idaho includes statewide extension resources, including 4-H; and WHEREAS, 4-H clubs in Idaho are encouraged to perform 100 hours of community service during this year’s centennial; and WHEREAS, Activities may include writing letters to military personnel; delivering 100 handshakes to “pay it forward;” performing for residents of nursing homes; volunteering at food banks; leading the Pledge of Allegiance at City Council meetings, and more; and WHEREAS, The University of Idaho Extension Services’ theme for this commemoration is: “100 years: Idaho 4-H: Something to celebrate;” NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor for the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as Idaho 4-H Recognition Month in the city, and I urge everyone to support 4-H programs and the youth who engage in them, at the Latah County Fair—coming up again this September 13-16—and throughout the year.
