PROCLAMATION JANET FISKE APPRECIATION DAY 2006 Whereas, Janet Murray Fiske, born November 23, 1912, (along with her husband, John Fiske) made Moscow her home in September, 1970; and Whereas, As a member of the League of Women Voters, Janet Fiske took an immediate interest in the condition and surroundings of Paradise Creek because of the 1970 flood in Moscow and worked with the League on a League Study to address what public policies should be adopted to clean up Paradise Creek and make it an asset to the town; and Whereas, One of the options for the creek was to beautify and take back the creek and Janet Fiske often expressed her enthusiasm for “our” waterfront, the banks of Paradise Creek; and Whereas, In 1996, as a result of being invited to a potluck with the Linear Park Task Force at Hordeman Pond, Janet Fiske requested appointment to the Task Force; and Whereas, As a Task Force member, Janet Fiske has worked on creek improvement, path development, park development and beautification, as the Task Force has become the Paradise Path Task Force, and has consistently worked on behalf of the citizens of Moscow in developing the banks and environs of Paradise Creek; and Whereas, Janet Fiske has always had an interest in historic preservation from her youth in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Whereas, Janet Fiske assisted in the preservation and reuse of the Old Post Office/present City Hall where this proclamation is being made, the preservation of the Carnegie Library and addition of space to the library that is compatible with the original historic architecture, and in the preservation and future development of the 1912 Center; and Whereas, As a member of the Moscow Historic Preservation Commission since the early 1990s, Janet has worked to promote historic preservation and specifically undertaken the Mayor’s photo project which chronicles all but five photos of Moscow’s mayors and decorates the Mayor’s Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall; and Whereas, Janet Fiske has accepted “emeritus” status, as an honorary member of the Historic Preservation Commission; and Whereas, Janet Fiske has been honored for seventy five years of membership in the Delta Delta Delta Sorority this month; and Whereas, Janet Fiske continues to follow the inspiration of her father’s advice, given so many years ago: “Do what YOU know to be right!” and Whereas, Janet Fiske proudly proclaims Moscow her permanent home. ---PAGE BREAK--- NOW THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor of the City of Moscow, Idaho do hereby declare and proclaim the 22nd day of April, 2006, as “JANET FISKE APPRECIATION DAY” and encourage every Moscow citizen to attend the Paradise Path Task Force Celebration recognizing the completion of our first east/west connection on the path between noon and 3 P.M. Saturday, April 22, at Berman Creekside Park on the Paradise Path, south of Styner Avenue. I encourage everyone to enjoy the festivities honoring Janet Fiske for her many years of devotion to the City of Moscow and its citizens, making Moscow a richer, more welcoming, and more vibrant community.
