Nineteen days exceeded 90 degrees Precipitation for the month was 1.18 inches, 0.51 inches below the normal of 1.69 inches. There were only nine days of measurable precipitation. West Nile Virus As of September 11th Colorado had 61 confirmed cases of human West Nile Virus. Of these 25 are uncomplicated fever cases, 17 are encephalitis cases, 15 are meningitis cases, and 4 are blood donors. There has been one fatality thus far. Counties in which human cases have been identified are: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Costilla, Crowley, Douglas, El Paso, Fremont, Huerfano, Jefferson, La Plaza, Larimer, Logan, Mesa, Morgan, Pueblo and Weld. Larval Control A total of 36 larval inspections were performed in August in Monument. Breeding was found in 11 sites, or 37% of all wet sites and a total of 1.5 acres were subsequently treated. ---PAGE BREAK--- Wear Your Repellent! • CDC recently came out with new repellent recommendations, visit our website for a link & more information. • Studies have shown that most human cases of WNV were preventable. Most people infected did not take precautions such as wearing long sleeves and using repellents. • The most effective repellents contain 10%-35% DEET (N,N- diethyl-meta- toluamide). • DEET in high concentrations, above 50%, provides no additional protection. Adult Control Operations/Surveillance A total of 0 miles of adulticide applications took place in August.
