BRIEF PROJECT SUMMARY Please provide a brief summary of this proposal which describes: The nature of the proposed activity, The proposed use of funds, The nature of the assisted business, What the BSTF financial assistance would be used for, and Provide any relevant historical information on this project or the region it would support. InterMedia Outdoors is the largest and most diverse multimedia company serving the outdoors marketplace. Components of InterMedia Outdoors include 15 market- leading magazines, more than 20 websites which host over 1.9 million unique visitors each month, merchandising, database marketing and Broadcast & Event properties. InterMedia Outdoors’ Broadcast platform includes the Sportsman Channel and Barrett Productions, as well as multiple other TV and radio programs. InterMedia’s tie to Montana is Barrett Productions. This local company, which was purchased by InterMedia in 2009, had produced programming for InterMedia’s outlets while independently owned. Now, InterMedia Outdoors is considering a consolidation of its production, and Missoula, Montana is an ideal place for the Sportsman Channel to locate. Like any relocation, this prospect has additional offers from other states. The benefits of the company’s consolidation and expansion in Missoula include the established infrastructure at Barrett Productions’ facility, as well as a skilled labor force coming out of The University of Montana’s productions and media programs. MAEDC has been working with the company to package a Work Force Training application, and this Big Sky Trust Fund application to assist with the costs of the relocation. Currently, Barrett Productions produces six programs for the Sportman Channel. InterMedia Outdoors plans to increase the location’s output to nearly all of the ---PAGE BREAK--- Big Sky Economic Development Trust Fund Program Application Guidelines Montana Department of Commerce Appendix A, Page 3 2009 Category I – Economic Development programming seen on the Sportman Channel. In order to accomplish this, the company will be hiring 49 new employees, and providing additional training to its 36 existing employees. The company will begin broadcasting in High Definition (HD), which means additional training for the technical crew. 15 of the existing 36 employees qualify under the BSTF and WFT wage requirements. Business’ Current Employment Level in Montana 36: In August of 2008, Barrett Productions, a small productions firm in Missoula, was acquired by Intermedia Outdoors. At that time, InterMedia made the decision to keep the jobs in Missoula, retaining 36 positions that could otherwise have been relocated to one of InterMedia Outdoors' other locations or eliminated completely. Business’ Current Employment Level at the Project Site 36 Employee Benefits: Please list benefits and eligibility requirements provided by the assisted business The company provides health care benefits and 401(K) match to all of its full-time employees. VI. PROJECT ECONOMIC IMPACT STATEMENT Please provide a summary of the impact the project would have on the state, regional and community economy as well as any services or functions that the business provides to the community, region or state. If InterMedia Outdoors were to expand operations in Missoula, the benefit would be state-wide. InterMedia’s income is nearly 100% out-of-state. With a current Montana payroll of $1.5MM, the company’s out-of-state investment into human capital will total nearly $3.5MM annually in the first two years following the expansion. These employees will be located in Missoula’s downtown district, increasing the chances that this out-of-state income will be circulated within the Missoula and Montana economy. Locating these high-tech, high-wage jobs to the downtown area supports goals established in the Greater Missoula Downtown Master Plan. In addition to the direct economic benefits, the infrastructure and technologies that this expansion will bring to the area will act as a springboard for additional projects and job creation. At this time, Barrett Productions is in discussions with The University of Montana regarding a possible partnership that would create dozens of jobs, and would help to attract students to the Montana University system. Please describe any negative impact of the project on the local, regional and/or state economy. There are no negative impacts foreseen related to this project. ---PAGE BREAK--- Big Sky Economic Development Trust Fund Program Application Guidelines Montana Department of Commerce Appendix A, Page 4 2009 Category I – Economic Development VII.
