City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Safety and Health Item: Dedicated Downtown Police Officer (DDPO) agreement with BID Date: 3/12/2009 Prepared by: Mark Muir, Chief of Police Initiated by: Mark Muir Action Required: Presentation to the committee on the new Dedicated Downtown Police Officer (DDPO) agreement with BID. Recommended Motion: None required – information only Timeline: Referral to committee: July 19th, 2010 Committee discussion: July 21st, 2010 Background and Alternatives Explored: Effective July 1, 2010 a new agreement was reached with the BID to provide a seasonal police officer dedicated to the downtown area. The position is funded by the BID and is in addition to the regular resources which the Department has provided to the downtown using the SRO's. The officer who is performing these duties (Nicole Pifari) is leaving the department to go to law school in the fall and hopes that this results in a continuing agreement so she can return during the summers while finishing law school. The Police Department has had this position in place for several weeks and the feedback from the business community has been tremendously positive. Financial Implications: If the first year trial is successful, it opens the door to a second year and the ability to rehire a trained police officer for a seasonal (4 months) period. Attachments:
