City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Works Committee Item: Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement (Site ID 184) Project Date: July 29, 2009 Prepared by: Kevin Slovarp, City Engineer Initiated by: Kevin Slovarp, City Engineer Action Required: Authorize the Mayor to sign a contract with HDR, Inc. for engineering design and construction services for the Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement Project for an amount not to exceed $36,000. Recommended Motion: The committee recommends the City Council authorize the Mayor to sign a contract with HDR, Inc. for engineering design and construction services for the Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement Project for an amount not to exceed $36,000. Timeline: Referral to committee: July 30, 2009 Committee discussion: August 5, 2009 Background and Alternatives Explored: The project consists of digging up approximately 400 feet of sanitary sewer main and replace the existing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) with a new PVC pipe. The existing RCP is failing structurally from the presence of hydrogen sulfide gases and during high groundwater conditions is allowing infiltration into the pipe. This groundwater infiltration is contributing to the wastewater treatment plant treating excessive water during high groundwater. The new PVC pipe withstands the corrosive nature of the hydrogen sulfide gases and will prevent groundwater infiltration. Financial Implications: The wastewater treatment plant will cover the engineering design and construction through the construction fund that is set aside for these types of repairs/replacements. The engineering services agreement is a not to exceed amount of $36,000. Attachments: Scope of Work Exhibit C
