City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Safety & Health Item: Confirmation of Police Officers Robert Larson, Jeffrey Lloyd, Michael Kamerer, Christian Cameron, Steven Crass, Josh Volinkaty Date: September 1, 2010 Prepared by: Laurie Clark Initiated by: Chief Mark Muir Action Required: Confirm Officers Larson, Lloyd, Kamerer, Cameron, Crass, Volinkaty Recommended Motion: Timeline: Referral to committee: 9/13/2010 Committee discussion: 9/15/2010 Council acts: 9/20/2010 Background and Alternatives Explored: Police Officers are hired as probationary officers and are on probation for a period of one year. Their training includes 11 weeks at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy (unless previously academy-certified) and they are then in our department's Field Training Officer program for up to 14 weeks. After this six month training period, officers are "on their own" responding to calls, etc. and are supervised by Corporals and Sergeants in their day-to-day activities. Once they have satisfactorily completed the academy, FTO program and six additional months of probationary status, they are referred to City Council for confirmation.
