City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Safety & Health Item: Authorize acceptance of the COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP) award. Date: August 3, 2009 Prepared by: Laurie Clark Initiated by: Mark Muir Action Required: Authorize Mayor to sign Award Document for CHRP Grant. Recommended Motion: The committee recommends the City Council approve and authorize the Mayor to sign a Grant Award document in the amount of $1,092,230 from the US Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) for the hiring of five police officers. Timeline: Referral to committee: August 17 2009 Committee discussion: August 19, 2009 Public Hearing: N/A Background and Alternatives Explored: The City of Missoula Police Department applied for and was subsequently awarded a US DOJ, COPS grant for hiring five police officers. The application was submitted for seven officers but only five were awarded. This grant allows local jurisdictions to replace unfunded positions as well as allow departments to hire additional officers to enhance the department's community policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts. Financial Implications: This award is in the amount of $1,092,230 for five officers for a three-year period. There is a one- year retention requirement for all five positions.
