City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Works Committee Item: Construction Bid Award for Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement Project (Site ID 184) Date: November 20, 2009 Prepared by: Kevin Slovarp Initiated by: Kevin Slovarp Action Required: Review construction bids for Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement Project (Site ID 184), award bid to lowest responsible bidder, Becco General Construction Services, LLC in the amount of $266,190.55 and authorize the return of bid bonds. Recommended Motion: The committee recommends the City Council approve and authorize the Mayor to sign a construction contract to award the bid for Reserve Street Sewer Main Replacement Project (Site ID 184) to the lowest responsible bidder, Becco General Construction Services, LLC in the amount of $266,190.55 and authorize the return of bid bonds. Timeline: Referral to committee: November 20, 2009 Committee discussion: December 16, 2009 Background and Alternatives Explored: The project consists of digging up approximately 400 feet of sanitary sewer main and replace the existing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) with a new PVC pipe. The existing RCP is failing structurally from the presence of hydrogen sulfide gases and during high groundwater conditions is allowing infiltration into the pipe. This groundwater infiltration is contributing to the wastewater treatment plant treating excessive water during high groundwater. The new PVC pipe withstands the corrosive nature of the hydrogen sulfide gases and will prevent groundwater infiltration. Financial Implications: The wastewater treatment plant R & D fund will cover the engineering design and construction through the construction fund that is set aside for these types of repairs/replacements.
