Recommended Motion: The committee recommends the City Council approve the resolution of intention to create SID 548 - 5th / 6th / Arthur Intersection Improvements and set a public hearing for November 9, 2009. Timeline: Referral to committee: October 1, 2009 Committee discussion: October 14, 2009 Council acts to set hearing: October 19, 2009 Public Hearing: November 9, 2009 Background and Alternatives Explored: A project that was larger in scope was originally considered by the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT). Ultimately MDT decided on the “No Build” alternative to the Environmental Assessment process. The purpose of the current project is to address basic safety issues associated with a high volume of pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles adjacent to the University of Montana campus on U. S. Highway 12 6th Street East and Maurice Avenue). This safety project will implement improvements on the State of Montana Department of Transportation Highway System and City roads adjacent to the University of Montana campus. Financial Implications: $1,250,000 Special Improvement District assessed to the University of Montana City – contribute in-kind labor for paving activities State – contribute labor and materials necessary for traffic signal installation.
