City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: A&F Item: Disposition of excess city owned parcels Date: 7/21/2010 Prepared by: Bob Jaffe Initiated by: Bob Jaffe Action Required: Request mayor to direct staff to perform required environmental evaluation and survey of properties and prepare an RFP. Recommended Motion: Timeline: Referral to committee: Committee discussion: Council acts to set hearing: na Public Hearing: na Deadline: na Background and Alternatives Explored: In light of the Missoula City Council resolution supporting affordable housing, the City of Missoula has been reviewing conditions on a number of city-owned parcels of land that may have a higher and better use than their current status as weed lots. The rising cost of land has been the most significant factor in the increasing cost of housing. By contributing this land to housing development with guarantees of permanent affordability, the city could offer a significant subsidy without incurring a large expense. Disposing of the lots in this way would also remove maintenance responsibilities and cost and possibly add the properties to the tax rolls. Financial Implications: Some initial costs would be incurred in assessing and preparing the properties. Attachments: Hyperlink to attachments here
