City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: Public Safety & Health Item: Review Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Application Date: June 15, 2009 Prepared by: Laurie Clark Initiated by: Mark Muir Action Required: Set Public Hearing to review second Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant application. This is a three-year grant. Recommended Motion: The committee recommends the City Council set a public hearing to review the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $48,485.00 of which $27,291.00 will be the City's portion. Timeline: Referral to committee: Committee discussion: Public Hearing: Background and Alternatives Explored: The Office of Justice Programs Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant provided $45,485.00 the City of Missoula and Missoula County to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system. The Missoula Police Department has designated its portion of the grant to be used for prescription drug abuse enforcement and community outreach. Missoula County intends to use its portion of the grant to continue its part-time property clerk position that has been funded with JAG monies since 2003. This grant is for a three-year period. Part of the application process for this grant is public notification of the solicitation and each agency's intended use for the funds. Financial Implications: This solicitation is $48,485. Missoula County and the City of Missoula will enter into an MOU regarding the disparity funding in the grant. $18,194 of this solicitation will be provided to Missoula County with the balance of $27,291 provided to City of Missoula Police Department programs.
