City of Missoula, Montana Item to be Referred to City Council Committee Committee: PAZ Item: Re-zoning of UM's Facility Services compound from R8 to OP3 Date: March 23, 2010 Prepared by: Marilyn Marler Initiated by: Marilyn Marler Action Required: Rezone a parcel at the northwest corner of the UM campus from R8 to OP3. Recommended Motion: I move the Missoula City Council set a public hearing to re-zone the designated parcel from R8 to OP3. Timeline: Referral to committee: March 23, 2010 Committee discussion: Chair's discretion- please concurrent with UM annexation referral Council acts to set hearing: Chair's discretion- please concurrent with UM annexation referral Background and Alternatives Explored: Most of the University of Montana campus is zoned OP3 (Public Lands and Institutional). Inexplicably, there is a small area in the north west corner of the main campus that is zoned R8 (Residential The result of this zoning is that anytime UM does something with the parcel (like add a bus shelter or a maintenance building) they must go through the Board of Adjustment. It is cumbersome and expensive in staff time and public money. This parcel should just be re-zoned to match the rest of campus. Main campus zoning = OP3 Public Lands and Institutional Current use of the parcel is for UM shops (plumbing, landscaping, vehicle maintenance) and motor pool, storage of landscape materials, general work yard, etc. It is not at all residential.
