With the new fixed meter program the Town is better able to identify leaks. If the Town identifies a leak at your property, we will notify you with a door knocker, or if the leak is substantial enough, we will call you immediately. If you have a water leak, you first need to determine whether it’s outside or inside your home. Most homes have two shut off valves, generally located near the foundation of the house, one for the main water to the house, the other for irrigation. Leaks on an irrigation lines can usually be isolated by shutting off the valve that feeds the irrigation system, and can be fixed at a later date. This valve should be turned off each year before winter to avoid leaks caused by freezing pipes. If the leak is inside the house, make sure the line is shut off at the valve before contacting a plumber. Many times a leak can simply be a leaky toilet. Stop by the office and we will provide you with a dye tab to put in the tank of the toilet, and if bowl changes color without you flushing, your hardware probably needs to be changed. Leaks coming from the Town’s water meter pits need to be reported to the Town of Minden office. Please do NOT attempt to shut off the valve from the Town’s water meter box. There is a fine for getting into the Town’s meter pits.
