During the process of collecting citizen input for the General Plan, it has become clear that people want new opportunities for working, living, and shopping in Millcreek. One idea to implement these desires has been to create a city center near City Hall, which is located in the shopping center on the corner of 33rd South and 13th East. The "Wedge", as city planners fondly reference it, is the area bounded roughly by Highland Drive on the east, Richmond Street on the north, 13th East on the west, and the commercial area in which City Hall is located. See the photo above. Planners have begun working on city code changes that would encourage and allow the development of a city center in The Wedge. We'd like The Wedge to have great new public spaces for Millcreek residents and visitors to enjoy. We need your input. The City is hosting a stakeholder meeting on Monday, April 30, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, at City Hall. "Stakeholders" are people who own property in this area, as well as people who have a stake (or are just interested) in Millcreek's future. At the meeting, we'll be showing you what we are currently thinking, and asking you: What do you want to see in your new City Center? How do we create a one-of-a-kind City Center for Millcreek? What makes great streets? How do we maintain the character of neighborhoods surrounding the City Center? Please come, have some refreshments, and share your vision. For many years, Esther's Garden has been planted and tended on the grounds of the Congregation Kol Ami's synagogue on Heritage Way. The garden is described as" a place of gathering, learning, growing, sharing and healing. Named after the Jewish Persian Queen; Esther, the garden offers community the opportunity to grow fruits and vegetables and share with those who need it. "It is also a place of socializing, relaxing, rekindling frindships and getting to know the neighbors while pulling some weeds, smelling the blossoms and biting on cucumbers and tomatoes.." Garden-Salt-Lake-City-387858998016879/ The garden is open to everyone. This Sunday, April 22nd, 9 am to noon, the Esther's Garden community is gathering to celebrate Earth Day with meaningful, productive and sustainable activity. That means picking up trash, getting the beds ready for planting, and bringing furniture out of the shed. You don't even have to get your hands dirty, as gloves will be provided. Bagels and coffee, too! The meeting is Tues., April 24th at 6 PM at the school. Click here for more info. PURGE THE SPURGE MILLCREEK. The Rotary Club of Millcreek is coming out next weekend to purge spurge on Grandeur Peak. Spurge can be pretty when it's in bloom, but it is a non-native ornamental plant that has invaded our hillsides. It is crowding out native plants. Worse, it's a nasty irritant when touched. The Rotary Club is working with Salt Lake County to remove some of the spurge on the hillside above the trail head. Guests are welcome! RSVP to Francis Lilly, Millcreek employee and Millcreek Rotarian, at [EMAIL REDACTED]. The project will take place on Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. miscellaneous REMINDER. The Salt Lake Marathon happens tomorrow (April 21st) from 6:15 AM to about 1:30 PM. It will obstruct travel in some parts of Millcreek.
