08/26/22: MILLCREEK ARTS FEST and BALDWIN RADIO FACTORY CELEBRATION; YOUTH COUNCIL; etc. View this email in your browser Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS East Mill Creek Community Council Thur., 9/1/22, 6:30 pm NEWS Arts Festival Celebrates the Baldwin Radio Factory's 100th Birthday MILLCREEK. The Millcreek Arts Council will be celebrating the 100th birthday of the Historic Baldwin Radio Factory tomorrow, Saturday, August 27th from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The Millcreek Arts Fest is free to the public and is ---PAGE BREAK--- City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E or join virtually HERE located at the original factory building at 3474 S 2300 E. You can also access the festival from Evergreen Park (2266 E Evergreen Ave). This historic building was built by Nathaniel Baldwin, inventor of the first modern headphones. The factory was originally powered by an electric generator on the Mill Creek, a device that Baldwin designed. The original high- tech hub in Utah, the Baldwin Factory once employed more than 300 people, including Philo T. Farnsworth, inventor of the television, and James B. Lansing, inventor and founder of JBL speakers. Currently, Baldwin Factory is an art space that includes 20 art studios, a popular cafe, a yoga studio, and vintage furniture shop. The Millcreek Arts Fest will have more than 60 artist booths, as well as two stages for live music and poetry, an interactive kid's zone, and a food truck court. This will be a celebration to remember! ---PAGE BREAK--- The Millcreek Youth Council Wants YOU! Several Opportunities Available MILLCREEK. The Millcreek Youth Council is busy as always serving our community, and they want you to know about several opportunities where you ---PAGE BREAK--- can also be involved. WEEKEND MEAL KIT DRIVE. The Youth Council will be gathering donations for the next two weeks to help the Granite Education Foundation's Weekend Meal Kits drive. Weekend Meal Kits are sent home in the backpacks of food insecure children in our schools. The pack contains enough food for four meals and several snacks. For a full list of needed food items, click HERE. You can drop off your donations at Millcreek City Hall, Monday-Friday between 8 AM-5 PM. All donations must be dropped off by September 9th before 5 PM. ASSEMBLY OF WEEKEND MEAL KITS. Join the Youth Council and others on Saturday, September 10th, at the Granite Education Foundation's Donation & Distribution Center (3099 S 1030 W, West Valley City) to help assemble the donations into Weekend Meal Kits. The goals is to assemble 15,000 Kits. You can sign up for one-hour shifts HERE. LOCAL BUSINESS EXPO. Millcreek was just ranked the 4th best city in the nation to start a small business. Read the report HERE. The Millcreek Youth Council wants you to get to know some of the incredible small businesses that call Millcreek home. To do this, they are hosting Millcreek’s first ever Local Business Expo on Thursday, September 1st, from 5 to 8 PM at the Millcreek Common, 1354 E. Chambers Ave. Take a stroll around the Common and discover local businesses with services ranging anywhere from florists to fitness, salons to sports, and clothing to cars. While you’re there, stop by the food trucks and pick up a delicious meal. Follow the Millcreek Youth Council on Instagram to stay up to date with their activities and service opportunities ---PAGE BREAK--- The Food Waste Collection Pilot Program is Still Taking Sign-Ups— Don't Miss Your Chance MILLCREEK. The Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District has partnered with Momentum Recycling to conduct a curbside food waste collection pilot program in East Mill Creek and Canyon Rim. The food waste is taken to Wasatch Resource Recovery, Utah’s first anaerobic digester, where it undergoes a process that converts your food waste into biogas used to heat homes. The left-over matter will be used to produce a bio-based fertilizer. The pilot program began July 6th and will run until September 28th. After the pilot, Momentum Recycling will carry on the services for an additional fee charged separately from Interested in learning more about the service? A live scenario to teach you about the many agencies and partners you will be working with during a disaster recovery. This "hands on" experiential-based learning tool is the perfect opportunity to teach you, your family, and your neighbors the importance of personal and family preparedness. Little to no knowledge about disaster preparedness, response or recovery is needed for this simulation, so it's the perfect tool to introduce you to the wild and often hectic world of emergency response. Construction of a new section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) between Parleys Canyon and Millcreek Canyon will begin in the coming weeks. This will provide the surrounding community with a professionally built, moderate grade, shared-use, recreational trail. Construction will take place between August 22nd and November 15, 2022. Project oversight will be conducted by the non-profit Trails Utah in cooperation with Millcreek, the USFS Salt Lake Ranger District, and Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. During construction, the new Grandeur Peak Trail and some existing user- created trails in the area will be closed. For your safety, please avoid the construction area, stay off of the new trail sections, and respect closures of user-created trails.
