Based on residents' requests and because we have been seeing Bird scooters in our city with no way to regulate them, Millcreek has entered into a license agreement with Bird. This will allow Bird scooters to be more available to Millcreek residents starting on May 27th, and establish some ground rules for their operation. The scooters will be accessible through a mobile phone application. Riders will pay to use the scooter per minute, at no cost to the city. "We welcome Bird to Millcreek as a responsible partner and look forward to ---PAGE BREAK--- having the scooters available in a way which balances various interests riders, vehicle operators, residents and businesses." said Mayor Silvestrini. "I am hopeful Bird scooters will prove a valuable addition to our community, helping to achieve transportation equity, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion, and providing an eco-friendly alternative to traveling around Millcreek." Riders must be at least 18 years-old to access the scooters, and are encouraged to wear a helmet on every ride. Scooters have a maximum speed of 15mph, and can be used on roads and in bike lanes. Riders are required to obey all standard rules of the road. Scooters must be parked out of the way of pedestrians and never blocking driveways. "These scooters can be utilized for a number of different activities, such as traveling to work, making a quick trip to the grocery store, or visiting a local Millcreek business," said Mayor Silvestrini. "We anticipate that the scooters will help people without cars get around more readily, and also provide that last- mile connection to public transit." Bird offers the following programs that are available for all who qualify: Community Pricing - Bird’s Community Pricing Program offers a 50% discount to low-income riders, Pell grant recipients, select local nonprofit and community organizations, veterans, and senior citizens. When a report is submitted, a member of the Bird team is assigned to correct the issue.
