PUBLIC MEETINGS Canyon Rim Citizens Association Wed., 11/1/23, 7 pm City Hall 1330 E Chambers Ave NEWS Surplus Produce Collection Program Delivers Results MILLCREEK. Millcreek’s Promise Program views reliable access to fresh food as a key building block of food security for all Millcreek residents. Founded as a farming community, Millcreek today contains a substantial number of large private gardens where people grow fruits and vegetables using their land and water resources. In other more densely developed areas of Millcreek, residents lack access to garden space; may not ---PAGE BREAK--- 6th Fl Multipurpose Rm Join virtually HERE East Mill Creek Community Council Thurs., 11/2/23, 6:30 pm City Hall 1330 E Chambers Ave 6th Fl Multipurpose Rm Join virtually HERE be able to afford seeds, plants, and water; or may not have the time it takes to successfully grow produce. Millcreek Promise wanted to test the hypothesis that gardeners in our City with produce surplus to their needs would be willing to have it redistributed to those in need elsewhere in the city, with the result that waste would be reduced, and access to fresh produce by others would be increased. Millcreek Promise designed a program, engaged partners, and ran a pilot program from early July through early October, 2023. They partnered with local non-profit Wasteless Solutions, an organization experienced in “rescuing” available food and redistributing it to those in need across the Salt Lake Valley. The partnership with Millcreek was the first pilot that Wasteless Solutions ran with a municipal entity. Millcreek Promise worked with four organizations to deliver produce so that they could distribute those to clients interested in fresh produce. The organizations were Bud Bailey Apartments, The Maliheh Clinic, Jewish Family Services Food Pantry, and the Community Action Hal Schulz daycare program. Eight different Millcreek residents offered to set out a weekly cooler for produce collection in their neighborhood, and contributions were taken at City Hall, as well, for a total of nine weekly collection sites. Coordinating with Wasteless Solutions’ volunteers, produce was collected twice weekly from these sites and was reliably delivered to the non-profit organizations throughout the summer. The results of this pilot program were very heartening, and the feedback from Promise partners has been positive. Overall, 2,000+ pounds of surplus produce was collected. Wasteless Solutions uses a formula to calculate the number of meals that can be produced from measured volumes of produce, and that number, for the Promise pilot, is 1,669 meals. Partner agencies that received produce for their clients have uniformly reported that they would like to again participate in 2024. We thank them for being willing to give this idea a try. We want to express gratitude to Wasteless Solutions, our pickup and delivery partner, for their reliable service to our community. In addition, we want to extend a huge thank you to the eight ---PAGE BREAK--- Millcreek residents who dutifully put out their coolers weekly so neighbors could contribute produce, advertised the program to their neighbors and assured that pickup by Wasteless Solutions was coordinated. Working together, all parties made a positive difference this summer in shoring up food security for Millcreek citizens. Fewer apples, zucchini, herbs, lettuce, beets, peaches and eggs went to waste, and instead nourished our community. Another year of growing and sharing fresh produce starts in Spring 2024. City Hall Has Officially Moved As of this afternoon, all of our employees have officially moved to our new City Hall building at 1330 E Chambers Avenue (3205 South). This has been a long and sometimes difficult process for our employees, and our residents, and we thank you for your patience and understanding. We are working hard to get our offices and equipment up and running, but most of our employees are not available for in- person appointments at this time. City services such as Building Permits & Inspections, Business Licensing, Public Works Permits, Planning Applications, and Report a Concern are designed to be done completely online through our website. If you need to speak with an employee, call or email the person you need directly. We once again ask for your patience for the next several weeks as we work to return to business as usual. We are striving for no interruptions in our service, but we will inevitably run into problems where we may not be immediately available to answer your questions. ---PAGE BREAK--- ELECTION REMINDER MILLCREEK. A friendly reminder that the City Council District 3 boundaries were amended last year during the redistricting process. Shown above is a map of its current boundaries. The City Council District 3 race is contested. David F. Holz and Scott Springer will be on the ballot with incumbent Cheri Jackson on November 21st. Click HERE for their contact information. The City Council cancelled the uncontested District 1 and Mayor races via Resolution 23-46 and elected the sole declared candidates the winners, Silvia Catten and Jeff Silvestrini. After leaving Florida in 2019 to travel, Willow eventually touched base down in Salt Lake City, UT. Specializing in acrylic paint, Willow really enjoys using art as a way to express emotions and vulnerability for mental health. Virtually representing things such as "overthinking", Willow feels that a picture really is worth a thousand words and expression can be something that is shared under multiple fonts. Having a background in customer service and management, Willow started taking art more seriously in 2019 as a form of therapy as well as expression. Previously known for art being "creepy, but cool" Willow believes that vulnerability isn't always happy, positive, beautiful or ugly. However, vulnerability with art makes you feel something and sometimes that feeling of uncomfort can be "creepy", but isn't it beautiful how art alone can help you understand your emotions more with a bit of uncomfort? ---PAGE BREAK--- A band of brothers, Brother Run comprises an acoustic duo of singer- songwriters starring Austin Stoddard and brother, Skylar Stoddard.
