03/18/22: CITY HALL CONSTRUCTION OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY; WASATCH BLVD VISION; WELLBEING; etc. View this email in your browser Mayor Silvestrini thanking all the folks whose vision and assistance got the City Hall project off the ground. Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS No Public Meetings NEWS Millcreek Thanks Countless Visionaries for our New City Hall MILLCREEK. The weather cooperated and a large crowd showed up Thursday afternoon to participate in breaking ground for Millcreek's soon-to-be City Hall. Mayor Jeff Silvestrini welcomed and thanked multiple federal, state, and county ---PAGE BREAK--- representatives, as well as those from neighboring cities, Unified Police, Unified Fire, Wasatch Front Regional Council, United Way, and the Granite School District. The Mayor also thanked the many Millcreek residents who robustly participated in planning for our new City Hall, many of whom came to join in the building's groundbreaking celebration. Shovels were manned by elected officials and many other groups and individuals who have been integral in the planning for this exciting building— City staff, as well as MHTN Architects, Okland Construction, and the financing teams who helped the City navigate the bond market. The building will include not only a built-in outdoor climbing wall, but a ground floor marketplace, with incubator space for local restaurateurs, a coffee/snack bar, rotating vendors, and a seasonal Farmers Market. A large City Council chamber and reception area will occupy the second floor, while the Millcreek Precinct of the Unified Police Department will move into the third floor. Conference rooms and offices for city employees will be on the fourth and fifth floors. The top-floor Community Room will be available for city related meetings and large events. We look forward to being in the same building with our police officers and being able to engage with them and the public on a daily basis, building relationships and community trust. ---PAGE BREAK--- Our Millcreek Precinct Unified Police officers jump for joy at the thought of leaving their current inadequate location on 39th South to move into the third floor of the new City Hall building. The Mayor recognized descendants of the Chambers family, several of whom were in attendance. Samuel and Amanda Chambers, two former enslaved people who married and traveled to the Utah Territory in 1870, settled in Millcreek area and farmed a 30-acre plot of land, raising grapes, currants and other produce that was highly valued in the region. Our new City Hall and the Millcreek UPD precinct will both bear a Chambers Street address. Outlining its eco-friendly features, Mayor Silvestrini said, "This will be a modern green building with efficient energy-saving features, ever mindful of its carbon footprint. It will be topped with solar panels; and even the architectural screen feature which clads its exterior and gives the building its unique character, is designed with energy efficiency top-of-mind. The building materials will be natural mass timber, glass, wood, brick, and stone, and there will be EV charging stations in the parking structure." Other speakers at the event included Millcreek City Councilmembers Cheri Jackson, Silvia Catten, and Tom Desirant, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie ---PAGE BREAK--- Rivera, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, and Millcreek City Manager / Economic Development Director Mike Winder. Thank you to all who participated and helped make this happen. We look forward to another celebration in 2023 when City Hall is completed.
