Last summer's flurry of complaints from residents across the state, together with the danger to residents posed by first responders having to respond to an elevated number of fireworks-caused fires instead of other calls for help, prompted a change in Utah's fireworks laws. (Thank you, Senator Iwamoto, for spearheading this legislation). This is a reduction of 40% over what was previously allowed. The penalty for discharging fireworks when or where not permitted is now $1,000. And the civil liability for causing a fire with illegally discharged fireworks includes damages caused by the fire and costs of suppression. It just got very expensive to shoot off fireworks illegally. The Unified Fire Authority has created a map showing where fireworks are prohibited throughout Salt Lake County due to hazardous environmental conditions. This map is displayed wherever you buy fireworks. Click here for an interactive copy of the map. The map may be changed from time to time, so it's good to check back before your event. In general, there are NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED ABOVE WASATCH BOULEVARD, near to the Parleys Nature Preserve, in Big Cottonwood Park, and near the Jordan River and within 200 feet of Mill Creek in substantial sections. The fire marshal has determined that these areas of Millcreek are restricted, due to historic or current hazardous environmental conditions. Note that for other areas of the City to become restricted, the fire marshall must investigate and find the existence of historic or current hazardous environmental conditions. EVENTS. MILLCREEK'S OWN FLINT & STEEL TO PERFORM MONDAY IN THE PARK MILLCREEK. The band has played the Utah Arts Festival, Ogden Music Festival, the Old Capitol Arts Festival, and the IAMA Bluegrass Festival. The banjo and mandolin players are past winners of the Utah State Instrument Championships and competed nationally. A MESSAGE FROM MT. OLYMPUS CHAIR DAVID BAIRD ABOUT SPEEDING MILLCREEK. One of the most frequent complaints we get from Millcreek residents is about speeding. Our UPD officers will be engaged in a special effort throughout the City this summer to enforce speeding laws. Yesterday the UPD focused on the Mt. Olympus neighborhood. Here is a letter from Mt. Olympus Chair David Baird describing what happened. Please use common sense and SLOW DOWN for the safety of everyone in Millcreek.. JUNE 28, 2018 Hi Neighbors, At the request of both Millcreek City and the Mt. Olympus Community Council, the UPD conducted a 2 hour, multiple officer observation on Jupiter and Oakview Drive today. They had 8 stops, 2 of which were for running the stop sign at Oakview and Jupiter, plus 6 speeding tickets on both Jupiter and Oakview Dr. Two separate speeders were clocked at 39 MPH in a 25 MPH zone. All of the speeders were local residents. Please heed our warning that the UPD will be conducting many more of these radar traps on many different streets in the future (including Oakcliff, Oakview, Jupiter, Fortuna, Brockbank and Cumorah). They'll be random and they'll likely involve multiple officers, just like today. I also want to share a positive quality of our neighborhood exhibited today: Subscribe Past Issues Translate ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/30/2018 Fireworks restrictions in Millcreek 8/11 many residents gave the UPD officers a thumbs up instead of the middle finger during their efforts (one kind neighbor even offered one of the officers cash to say thank you, which the officer politely declined of course). I'm glad to see that many residents were pleased to see the UPD as they (slowly) drove by this evening. The Mt. Olympus Community Council will be meeting with the city staff and UPD in the next few months to discuss other long term speed calming strategies. I'll post the scope and times on Nextdoor as details are finalized. David Baird Chair, Mt. Olympus Community Council * Nextdoor is a neighborhood "social network" that you can sign up for.
