Millcreek has a new tractor-drawn aerial vehicle at Fire Station 106, 1911 East 3300 South. It replaces the tower ladder truck that previously served out of Station 106. UFA Assistant Chief Mike Watson explains, “This is a specialized apparatus that is driven from the front AND the rear of the vehicle. Having a steering axle on both ends of the apparatus makes it much more maneuverable. In fact, it can turn sharper corners and maneuver on smaller roadways than an aerial apparatus that is much Subscribe Past Issues Translate ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/30/2018 New "Crab" Fire Engine Not Designed to Get Through Gawkers 2/15 3330 S 13th E Agenda below Planning Commission Wed., 8/15/18, 5 PM City Hall Annex 3330 S 13th E Agenda below Visit our Calendar of Events by clicking here shorter.” The engine can even parallel park by "crabbing", or moving sideways. The 100-foot ladder is controlled remotely rather than from inside the truck, which allows the engineer to move around outside the truck and accurately place the ladder. As an additional feature, the engine doesn’t idle while on scene. Instead, a secondary generator kicks in to power emergency equipment. This not only conserves fuel, it helps keeps emissions out of our air. Notwithstanding the mobility of this new vehicle, UFA urges us all to keep streets and fire lanes sufficiently open that this engine, as well as all of the fire department's equipment can pass by. Fire vehicles responding to a recent residential fire in Millcreek were prevented by gawkers from immediately reaching the scene of the fire. This could have been deadly. Excerpt from article in the August 2018 Newsletter of the Utah Chapter ICC (International Code Council) By Patricia Fail On January 1st, 2017, Salt Lake County welcomed its 17th city. Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek and Olympus Cove neighborhoods, home to nearly 62,500 people, became the 10th largest city in the state of Utah and as the Salt Lake County inspection coordinator, it wasn't easy handing over the reigns of half of my 40 hour week to a new city.... I felt like the first day Millcreek took over inspections was as nerve racking for me as it must have been for them. I could not believe how much they were taking on! The transition started last October. First with planning, then plan review and finally handing over inspections. Since then, there have been several questions I've wanted to ask and being the newsletter editor gave me the perfect opportunity to ask Millcreek what kind of struggles they have encountered. When I reached out to Francis Lilly - Community Development Director for Millcreek, he was thrilled to be included in this months newsletter. He pitched the idea to Kurt Hansen - City Services Director for Millcreek who shared the same enthusiasm and Subscribe Past Issues Translate ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/30/2018 New "Crab" Fire Engine Not Designed to Get Through Gawkers 9/15 here are his responses. Q. I know some of your building department staff came from other cities and counties, that obviously made processes come together a lot easier, but did you hire any newbies that were unprepared for the first day you opened your office to permit applications and inspections? A. As I contemplated the task at hand — the task of jumping into the middle of projects and plan reviews already underway, I knew that I had to hire a team of seasoned and experienced professionals. I hired a building official, an assistant building official (building inspector), and a permit tech who were ready to hit the ground running. So, no, there was no room for newbies. I am still one inspector short, because of the shortage of certified building inspectors, so I have been using WC-3 to help us complete all of our daily inspections. Let me add, that my little team has been super. I could not have asked for a better team. They have worked through every challenge and I have been so impressed with their conquering spirit. Q. I know Millcreek broke away from the programs the county uses for permitting and plan reviews. What kind of research did you do before committing...... Click here to read the full article. MILLCREEK.
