Everyone loves a good fireworks show, right? Except dogs. And people with breathing problems. And neighborhoods where illegal fireworks seem to go on all night throughout the whole summer, and sometimes in the winter, too. Earlier this week, the City Council passed an Subscribe Past Issues Translate ---PAGE BREAK--- 11/1/2018 Fireworks laws / June 10 and 12 agendas 2/8 Wednesday, 06/14/17 6 PM, 2001 S. State St., Rm. BUSINESS LICENSES Here is the list of Millcreek business licenses issued between May 29 and June 2. Thanks to each of you! CRIME STATISTICS Here are maps showing the locations of UPD's calls and cases opened during May 2017. ROAD CONSTRUCTION Click here for an update on I-80/Parleys/Foothill road construction ordinance to prohibit fireworks and open fires east of Wasatch Boulevard and within 200 feet of Parleys Canyon. Like other cities throughout Utah, Millcreek is constrained by state law from doing anything more. The state legislature has set the days and hours throughout the year that fireworks can be discharged. For two weeks in the summer and several days around the beginning of the new year, you can expect fireworks for sometimes more than 12 hours a day. Click here to review the state law, §53-7-225. There is no question that many enthusiasts ignore the state restrictions, and set off fireworks well after midnight and outside the allowed time. Our constituents are rightfully upset by these scofflaws, and want the City to intervene. But given the nature of the crime, the law is difficult to enforce. By the time an illegal firework is discharged, and the police are called and arrive, the lawbreakers are often long gone. You and your neighbors are the eyes and ears of the community. Together, you are the first defense to those who break the law. Keep track of the dates, times, and locations of illegal fireworks. Patterns may emerge such that repeat offenders may be identified and apprehended. It would be so great if neighbors would just respect each other and not discharge fireworks after hours or on the days the law prohibits them. If you have strong views about fireworks, please reach out to state lawmakers, those in this area as well as elsewhere. Ask people you know in different legislative districts to talk to their representatives. In the meantime, here are some good tips for keeping your dog safe and calm. Two city council seats, Districts 2 and 4, are up for grabs this year. Only three candidates jumped into the ring, meaning there will be no primary. Councilmember Bev Uipi, representing District 4, will be unopposed on November's ballot. In District 2, Dwayne Vance has challenged Councilmember Dwight Marchant, for a rematch of last year's campaign. State law requires that municipal councils have staggered terms, with elections during off-U.S. presidential cycle years. That means that last November's election for Millcreek's City Council Districts 2 and 4 were for only one year. Elections for Districts 1 and 3, and the mayor's office, will be held in 2019. Click here for further information on this year's candidates. Click here for locations of drop boxes, vote centers and other related election information. What to do Tonight?
