12/16/22: MILLCREEK COMMON IS AWARD-WINNING; CHANUKAH CANDLE LIGHTING; HOLIDAY LIGHTS VOTE; etc. View this email in your browser Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS Planning Commission Wed., 12/21/22, 5 pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E NEWS MILLCREEK HAS AN AWARD- WINNING TOWN SQUARE MILLCREEK. Within six years of incorporation, Millcreek has become one of few American cities to have an award-winning town square. Millcreek Common was recognized earlier this week by Utah Construction and Design Magazine ---PAGE BREAK--- See agenda below as the 2022 Most Outstanding Project (Parks/Plaza category) Millcreek Common has also won the 2022 Landscape/Urban Development Award of Excellence from the Associated General Contractors of Utah. “When we asked the people of Millcreek what they wanted in our city center,” said Councilmember Cheri Jackson, “there was a strong desire for a gathering place and somewhere they could bring their families. We are thrilled to have worked with EPG, WPA Architecture, and Hogan Construction to make this beautiful venue a reality.” ---PAGE BREAK--- Sean Keller, project superintendent with Hogan Construction, says that he loved working on this unique project. “It is very gratifying to see so many people enjoying Millcreek Common now that it is completed,” he said. “This community is very fortunate to have such an impressive town square.” ---PAGE BREAK--- Enter HERE! On Wednesday, an avalanche in Neffs Canyon buried a skier up to his waist for 45 minutes before an off-duty EMT heard his cries for help. The skier suffered a broken femur, arm injury, and hypothermia, but was miraculously rescued. This frightening incident serves as a harsh reminder to all to be extra cautious when venturing into the outdoors, particularly alone. We want to remind residents that before going on their outdoor adventures to consider downloading the What3Words app. What3Words is an app that identifies every 10 square feet on earth with three random words. For example, ten feet inside Millcreek City Hall's council chambers is identified as porch.cost.ruler. Opening the app identifies your three-word location (with GPS accuracy within 65 feet), which can be shared with a rescue dispatcher. The rescuer can search easily within the app for the identified words, and is quickly directed to your location. "Having an app such as this can be very useful in an emergency," said Unified Fire Authority's Battalion Chief Duane Woolsey. He suggested that residents who like to venture into the outdoors should consider taking along this or a similar app. In the case of the skier that got trapped in the Neffs Canyon avalanche, he did not have access to his phone. For such cases, where it may not be practical or possible to use your cell phone, outdoor recreators should look into purchasing a GPS tracker to carry or clip onto your coat or lanyard. ---PAGE BREAK--- Millcreek is surrounded by beautiful canyons, and we know our residents love to take advantage of the outdoor recreation opportunities they provide. That's why we ask all residents to please be safe when going outdoors, particularly in the backwoods, and especially when going alone. Please tell your family or friends exactly where you are going and when you expect to be back. Additionally, look into downloading the What3Words app, or similar tracking app, or purchasing a physical GPS tracker. Millcreek Youth Council Subs for Santa MILLCREEK. This week, members of the Millcreek Youth Council went shopping to give a Millcreek family presents for Christmas as part of the Sub for Santa program. They were so excited to help fulfill this family's wish list, and couldn't stop smiling through the whole shopping trip! We are very proud of the Youth Council. ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Thanks to all who are opening their hearts and wallets to help support the people experiencing homelessness who are spending the cold nights at the temporary homeless shelter in Millcreek. We sent out a call for blankets and the response was amazing. We sent out a call for hats, gloves, and socks—donations came pouring through the door. Let's help these folks by supplying some store bought treats along with coffee, sugar and creamer for them to enjoy during this holiday time of year. Let's continue to show we care! ---PAGE BREAK--- Wilford Ward Stake House Demolition Underway MILLCREEK. Demolition is underway on the Wilford Ward Stake House. The city now owns the property and is demolishing the building in accordance with our purchase agreement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We have been asked why don't we repurpose the building—our agreement when we purchased the property prohibits reuse of the structure. A recent Salt Lake Tribune article explains why. "Some years ago, after a limestone Latter- day Saint meetinghouse was sold, the buyer turned one wing into a state liquor store, then punched a hole in the chapel wall to make it an auto body shop and lined it with hubcaps,' [recalled architectural historian and preservationist Allen Roberts]. 'People hated it.'” Thus, the church requires the demolition of structures on its properties that are sold. Except for the relocation of a natural gas regulator station, we are not sure what will be built on the site. Stay tuned. ---PAGE BREAK--- Bringing Serenity Through Music MILLCREEK. Our city is home to a somewhat unique service—live therapeutic music. Millcreek resident Mary Norton is a Certified Therapeutic Musician trained by Music Healing and Transition Program (MHTP), the oldest certified training program for therapeutic musicians in the country. Ms. Norton plays a lap harp for her therapeutic work, and is also certified as a vocalist. Ms. Norton currently volunteers three days a week at St. Mark’s Hospital, where she provides live one-on-one therapeutic music to patients and, when needed, staff. She volunteers in all kinds of medical situations, from playing for a mother-to-be in active labor, to helping a hospice patient transition from this life to the next. Ms. Norton notes that therapeutic music isn’t just for those in hospitals or recovery centers. Live therapeutic music has been medically proven to be extremely helpful in any stressful situation whether it be medical, professional or personal. While most of her work has been at the hospital, she is available for private sessions at homes or places of work, both in person and by ZOOM. You can contact her by email at [EMAIL REDACTED]. ---PAGE BREAK--- ---PAGE BREAK--- Volunteers Needed for Point-in-Time Count 2023 A MESSAGE FROM SALT LAKE COUNTY: The January Homeless Point-in-Time (PIT) Count in Salt Lake County will take place the mornings of Thursday, January 26th through Saturday, January 28th from 4:00 am to 6:00 am. The purpose of the PIT Count is to gain a deeper understanding of how many individuals are experiencing unsheltered homelessness on a given night. The goal is to count and interview every person experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake County. Your help is needed to accomplish this goal. Groups of volunteers will be formed and assigned to a census tract in Salt Lake County. On the mornings of the PIT, volunteer groups will go to their assigned tract and count and interview every individual they encounter experiencing homelessness. An app will be used to track the locations of where these individuals are observed and to conduct and record survey responses. Virtual training sessions will be provided for volunteers and cover topics such as the use of the app and the survey, a trauma- informed approach, racial equity, youth homelessness, and more. In addition, there will be a mandatory training the week of the PIT that will give an overview of PIT Count best practices for approaching and interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness as well as effective techniques to conduct the survey. A large number of volunteers will be needed to accomplish this PIT Count. We encourage you for form teams of 3 to 4 people with your friends, family, and coworkers and sign up together.
