At the Millcreek City Council meeting on November 23rd, 2020, a Proclamation of Millcreek as a Monarch City was approved unanimously. The Monarch butterfly is an iconic North American species. Its multigenerational migration and metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly has captured the imagination of millions of Americans, young and old. The Monarch pollinates many cultivated flowers and crops and is an indicator species for the ecological health of large geographic areas. Monarch numbers have diminished dramatically due to many factors, including lack of stands of native milkweed, a plant that is necessary for the reproduction cycle. Monarchs additionally rely on nectar producing plants such as butterfly bushes. The Proclamation asks Millcreek residents to make a difference for the Monarch by planting native nectar plants and milkweed to provide habitat. Our planners have included nectar producing plants in plans for the Mountair Streetscape along Highland Drive. Plant varieties that assist the Monarch will be included in future open space planning where possible. Millcreek has also applied for status as a Monarch City USA, and will be the second city in Utah to join. (Cedar Hill in Utah County is proud to be the first.) Residents interested in obtaining milkweed seeds for their gardens can contact Rita Lund, [EMAIL REDACTED], [PHONE REDACTED]. ---PAGE BREAK--- Learn how you can help the Monarch Monarch City USA Website Monarch Conservation in Utah Website Monarch Watch Website Learn about tagging and tracking Monarchs on Southwest Monarch Study Website Flu Clinic Tuesday!
