Announcements UPCOMING PUBLIC MEETINGS City Council Tues., 1/21/20 5:30 PM NEWS Millcreek's Future Grown-ups Weigh in on Millcreek Commons MILLCREEK. Mill Creek Elementary students have worked hard over the last several months designing their version of the open space that will ---PAGE BREAK--- Millcreek City Hall 3330 S 1300 E Agenda below CITY HALL CLOSED Mon., 1/22/20 Martin Luther King, Jr. Click here for our Calendar of Events be the centerpiece of our new "downtown". Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students in the school's First Lego League were asked "What if you could build a better world? Where would you begin?" Their challenge was to work together to imagine a better future for everyone. Led by Mill Creek teacher Jackson Bellaimey, and sponsored by the Millcreek Rotary Club, the Lego League determined to weigh in on what they wanted to see in the Millcreek Commons, the City's not-yet- built project that is still in the planning stages. Above all, the students love the idea of a big park in our city center. After taking into consideration such constraints as space, height, and the people the space will serve, these future planners concluded the park should include multiple "biomes", including a desert scape, a wetland, and a forest, all of which could be conducive to local insects and birds. They also planned an observatory; different playgrounds with plenty of seating for adults; a sledding hill that could double as amphitheater seating in the summer months; and space for food vendors. They then created these spaces with Lego building blocks, which helps the rest of us visualize how their ideas fit together. Our kids our future came up with a remarkably similar concept to what the professionals and grown-ups in the community have been angling toward. If you want to see what the grown-ups have in the works, come to the Millcreek Common Open House on next Wednesday at City Hall (see flyer below). The ---PAGE BREAK--- professionals have reviewed the results of the Open Space Poll released last November and come up with a master plan design. We look forward to your comments on what they've been doing. Many thanks to Mr. Bellaimey for his terrific teaching ability and extra work on this big project. And many thanks to the Millcreek Rotary Club for its sponsorship of the school's Lego League. ---PAGE BREAK--- ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS OPEN HOUSE THIS THURSDAY MILLCREEK. Plans are going forward to open a temporary emergency shelter in Sugarhouse this winter for people experiencing homelessness. This new shelter, located on the corner of Simpson Avenue. and Highland Drive in the old Deseret Industries building, is intended to be an overflow for the four nearby existing resource centers, three in Salt Lake City and one in South Salt Lake City. Click here for more information. Because it is so close to our boundaries, the shelter should help alleviate the recent uptick of campers in Millcreek parks and other areas of our city. If you want to help with the new shelter, you can drop off donations of blankets, money, and other resources at City Hall, 3330 South 1300 East.
