View this email in your browser Announcements UPCOMING PUBLIC MEETINGS Millcreek City Council & Community NEWS 7 ADULTS, 2 KIDS, 2 DOGS, AND 12 DUCKLINGS OWE THEIR LIVES THIS WEEK TO MILLCREEK FIREFIGHTERS MILLCREEK. A whole slew of people and critters are the fortunate recipients this week of Millcreek firefighters' rescue efforts. ---PAGE BREAK--- Reinvestment Agency Mon., 4/27/20, 6 pm City Hall 3300 S 1300 E Agenda below (electronic meeting) Firefighters from two Unified Fire Authority stations located in Millcreek, #101 at 790 E 3900 S and #106 at 1911 E 3300 S, were involved in the two separate rescues. In the first event, firefighters from UFA Station #101 rescued 12 ducklings that had fallen down a storm drain located at 7th East and 42nd South. To the cheers and applause of (socially-distanced) local residents, the entire brood was reunited with their frantic mother and moved to a safe location. Thank you, Station #101, for your successful efforts. The second event was much more dramatic The second event was early Wednesday morning, when a Medic Ladder unit from Millcreek's Station #106 responded to a 3-alarm fire at an apartment building at 4th East and 33rd South in South Salt Lake. On arrival, they found the front of the building fully ablaze, with all three stories of the building and the attic on fire. At that point, the stairwells had become inaccessible, and it was apparent that any residents who hadn't already escaped couldn't. The ML unit quickly pulled into an adjacent parking lot in the back of the building. Two adults and two kids were hanging out of the windows of an apartment on the third floor, unable to escape. The ML unit cut through a fence to set up their aerial equipment and pulled the victims to safety. The ML unit members then launched a high risk operation to search through all 24 apartments in the building for any more victims. Despite the extreme fire and smoke conditions, they were able to rescue five more adults and two dogs. Thanks to their work and that of firefighters from across the valley, the fire resulted in no fatalities. Kudos and many thanks to Captain Bob Claudianos, Engineer Roland Gilmore, Paramedic Mike Washburn, Firefighter Jason Barney, and ---PAGE BREAK--- Paramedic Mitch King, all of Millcreek's Station #106 Medic Ladder unit, for their risky and commendable work. A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR ABOUT THE QUARANTINE: To Millcreek residents and businesses: Later today, Salt Lake County Unified Command will issuing a recovery plan for gradual return to normalcy, broken down into four categories of businesses. There is NO relaxation of the Health Order at this time. However, everyone is hopeful we will be able to act in lockstep with the state of Utah, which anticipates beginning the relaxation of the Governor’s directive beginning May 1. From all indications, the trends of the infection rate and hospital capacity are heading in the right direction and we have made good progress in slowing the spread/flattening the curve. Nice work, Millcreek! Masks and social distancing will remain in our future for some time, but we can expect a gradual return of our economy and shopping/dining options. We will provide more details as they become available. Thanks for everyone’s cooperation! --Mayor Jeff Silvestrini Every year, the US News & World Report ranks every High School in the nation. This year, Skyline High School was ranked the #1 best non-charter public high school in Utah (outranked only by four charter schools). Congratulations Eagles! Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) is conducting its annual wildfire mitigation vegetation maintenance program in the Fire High Consequence Areas (FHCA) of the Salt Lake Valley's East Bench, including Millcreek. If you are subject to this program, you will be receiving (or may have already received) a door card, mailer, or even a knock on your door to let you know. According to RMP, the work has four main objectives: 1. Annually inspect all circuits located in the FHCA. 2. Mitigate trees that are of high risk for structural failure and have a high likelihood of contacting an overhead powerline if they fail. 3. Prune or remove encroaching trees to ensure vegetation does not violate minimum clearance distances prior to the next annual inspection. 4. Remove vegetation to bare ground within a 10-foot radius of some poles, using EPA-approved herbicide to prevent plants from growing back. RMP advises that this work is critical to aid in the prevention of potential fires and to protect our communities, public lands, watershed and more. For more information, call [PHONE REDACTED]. You don’t have to do this alone. Focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t – There is still fun, happiness, and joy in the world, go find it! Establish a routine and workspace Make time for physical exercise Have patience with yourself: Even trained teachers run out of steam and make mistakes. The best you can do today may be different from the best you could do yesterday, but the best you can do is the best you can do, and that is enough. Celebrate your child’s positive behaviors like kindness, honesty, resilience, patience, and perseverance. If You Live in a Home Built Before 1978 - This Program May Help Protect Your Kids Salt Lake County's Lead-Safe Housing Program is Taking Applications MILLCREEK. Millcreek homeowners may be eligible to obtain help from Salt Lake County to protect their families from the hazard of lead paint. Most homes built in the U.S. before 1978 were painted with lead paint, which was then-touted as quick-drying, moisture-resistant, and color-enhancing. Unfortunately, as it turns out, lead paint flakes also taste sweet to small children. Evidence that ingesting lead can cause seizures, as well as developmental and behavioral disorders, resulted in a federal ban of the substance in the 1970s. Though banned, lead paint remains in many homes, and many Millcreek homes have not undergone appropriate lead testing and removal. Salt Lake County is ---PAGE BREAK--- offering to help. Pursuant to their Lead Safe Housing Program, the County provides free lead testing for parents expecting a child and for children under the age of 6. The program also offers free home remediation services (like repainting, or replacing windows) for eligible homeowners, renters, and landlords in dwellings built before 1978. For more information and to see if you qualify for free services, visit Salt Lake County Lead Safe Housing or call [PHONE REDACTED].
