MILLCREEK PROMISE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE WELCOME TO THE MILLCREEK PROMISE BREAKFAST MEETING JANUARY 2019! ---PAGE BREAK--- A YEAR WITH PROMISE! This initiative will be a catalyst for youth success; creating opportunities, and mitigating issues facing many of the city’s young people and their families. Promise will accomplish its work through partnership, institutionalization of programs proven to get to the outcomes desired to change discriminating and inequitable community barriers to education, health and safety, and economic well being. ---PAGE BREAK--- WHAT IS THE MILLCREEK PROMISE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE? An assemblage of 50+ community members, grass roots leaders, health professionals, educators, safety officials, advocates, etc. that come together and help guide action items based off of data. We have been meeting once a month since June! ---PAGE BREAK--- ---PAGE BREAK--- OUR THREE PROMISES 1. 2. 3. EDUCATION: Strengthen and support our local schools to maximize academic success and educational outcomes envisioning all Millcreek youth as college graduates. HEALTH AND SAFETY: Work together to create a safer, healthier community through resident engagement, support of local law enforcement, fitness & nutrition programs, and health provider partnerships. ECONOMIC WELL-BEING: Enhance the economic well-being of Millcreek residents who are unemployed, underemployed or that have been denied access to education or vocational training that would result in their being able to better provide for themselves and their families. ---PAGE BREAK--- TOP EDUCATION TOPICS 1. MOSS & ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY. ---PAGE BREAK--- TOP HEALTH & SAFETY TOPICS Law Enforcement (10 votes) Community/Arts (8 votes) Mental Health (7 votes) ---PAGE BREAK--- TOP ECONOMIC WELL-BEING TOPICS Job Training Skills (19 votes) Financial Stability (13 votes) Employment (11 votes) ---PAGE BREAK--- In collaboration with our MP Executive Team, UWSL, and Mill Creel Elementary, the Promise Program has: HOW DO WE COVER THE COST OF OUR GOALS? • Awarded 2 grants, totaling $500,000 • Raised $7,280 in kind donations since June! ---PAGE BREAK--- PROMISE FIESTA! • Over 30 attendees throughout the evening • Hosted at local restaurant “Maria’s” with donated space • Performance by local slam poet, Promise SSL staff, and refugee- Saida Dahir • $780 raised ---PAGE BREAK--- Partnered with The Nature Conservancy, Outdoor Afro, Tracy Aviary, and more to create a city-wide field trip. The goal of the trip was to talk about migration for all forms of life. Many different cultures were there to offer their experiences. FIESTA FOR NATURE! ---PAGE BREAK--- WHAT A RIDE! Promise worked with Granite School District to promote the event in school and the city funded a bus and staff to chaperone children. 16 children from Bud Bailey Attended. Their parents were so excited to hear about the Promise Progam! ---PAGE BREAK--- ANNOUNCEMENTS READ WITH KIDS! VOLUNTEER PROGRAM • Mill Creek Elementary has an existing literacy coach that manages the volunteers. The coach has regular check-ins with the principal, teachers, and a community school liaison- hired in house by Salt Lake County Youth Services. • 4 of the 26 volunteer inquiries, are currently volunteering. 15 of the 26 have been invited to the 2nd volunteer orientation on January 25th. ---PAGE BREAK--- • The bulk of afterschool programming will be provided by Salt Lake County Youth Services. • Fridays will be elective days. • The principal, administrative staff, and SL County Youth services are working out details. • Programming for 5 & 6th graders will be covered by Spy Hop and Youthlinc to prepare them for feeder Jr. High School experiences. AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING ---PAGE BREAK--- 1 Existing data show that 3rd grade reading level (literacy) scores have the biggest impact on our top EDUCATION TOPICS. 2 SO, WHERE CAN WE IMPACT THIS? Mill Creek Elementary is one of the only elementary schools in our boundary that does not have Promise services or otherwise. 3 SO, HOW CAN WE IMPACT THIS? Afterschool programming and volunteer programs targeted on improving reading abilities. 4 Salt Lake County Youth Services will be working hand in hand with Millcreek Elementary and our READ WITH KIDS!
