MILLCREEK. The weather is finally warming up and people are spending more time outside enjoying our late spring weather. June was a very wet month and mosquitoes are starting to enjoy the small areas where water from our recent storms has collected. Did you know that mosquito is Spanish for "little fly" and that there are more than 3,500 species in every region of the world except Antarctica? During peak breeding seasons, mosquitoes outnumber every other animal on Earth except ---PAGE BREAK--- Agendas Below ants and termites. They also are the most deadly animals on earth, claiming more lies every year than sharks, snakes, dogs, crocodiles, lions, and humans combined. Add to all that the mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus. Is that enough scary information to be a reason why mosquito abatement is important? Millcreek residents are served by the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District. There is a lot of information on this website about these pesky little critters and what is being done to control them. Residents should do their part to prevent mosquitoes on their property, and it's pretty easy. Keep any potential mosquito breeding areas free of standing water. Drain any water that may collect in your yard such as in pots, clogged rain gutters, or any place where standing water may collect. Change the water in bird baths at least weekly (for mosquito control and happy birds). If you have an ornamental pond, install a fountain to keep the water moving. A great way to control mosquitoes in ornamental ponds is to request mosquito fish to stock the pond. The South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District can help with mosquito fish or provide briquets that can be used in these ponds. Keep storm drains clear to avoid ponding, This also helps with water quality and potential street flooding. It is important to keep any storm water moving. When recreating outside, you may want to use some mosquito repellent. The abatement district provides many additional services and can answer any questions you may have. You can reach their office at [PHONE REDACTED]. They also provide free educational presentations to homeowners associations, schools, senior centers, health fairs, and more. Contact the district educational specialist at to arrange for a presentation Avoid spending your outdoor time swatting and slapping! Please do your part to keep these pesky critters under control. ---PAGE BREAK--- TONIGHT ---PAGE BREAK--- MONDAY ---PAGE BREAK--- MONDAY Join the Millcreek Arts Council Every Monday at 7pm at Canyon Rim Park for a FREE Summer Jam Concert Series This Week (6/26) Featuring: If and When If and When is a young rock/blues band, made up of four lifelong friends from the Northern Utah area.
