09-17-21: REP. OWENS' VISIT; LOTS OF EVENTS IN MILLCREEK; CANYON SURVEY; LEAD SAFE HOUSING, etc. View this email in your browser Mayor Silvestrini gives Congressman Burgess Owns a tour earlier this week of construction progress on the Millcreek Common. Here they are looking at the foundation of the new ice ribbon. Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS None this week NEWS U.S. Rep. Burgess Owens Visits Millcreek MILLCREEK. U.S. Congressman Burgess Owens paid a visit to Millcreek this past Tuesday to better understand issues in our city. Mayor Silvestrini walked the Congressman through housing and development issues facing Millcreek. They toured the Millcreek Common construction site and then visited the Neff’s Canyon Trailhead. “Representative Owens was especially interested in working with the city to find a long-term solution to our ---PAGE BREAK--- floodplain issues in Olympus Cove and the possibility of a debris catch basin in Neff's Canyon,” said the Mayor. “We also discussed improvements to the Neff’s Canyon Trailhead parking lot and other improvements on National Forest Service land that borders our city.” Recent changes to the FEMA floodplain below Neff’s Canyon have shown the many homes in the Mt. Olympus community are at risk of sustaining property damage as well as potential life safety concerns during future flooding events. The amount of damage would be reduced by the construction of a debris basin in the mouth of the canyon that could catch mud, rocks and debris and direct the water washing the rocks and debris out of the canyon into storm drains. After a major fire in 2019 resulting in potential evacuations of portions of the Mt Olympus community, discussions began with the Forest Service to consider the Neff’s Canyon trailhead area as a location for a paved firefighting staging location, small helicopter pad and a “heliwell” where firefighting helicopters could fill their buckets and avoid the time-consuming trip to reservoirs to dip water--every minute counts during a wildfire event. The Forest Service indicates that installation of these fire fighting features at the Neff’s Canyon site would provide for fire safety for many areas along the Wasatch Front. An added benefit to the project would be to provide additional parking for the many canyon visitors who enjoy hiking and recreating in Neff’s Canyon. ---PAGE BREAK--- Construction of a debris basin and firefighting infrastructure in Neff's Canyon would be costly. Mayor Silvestrini discussed potential funding sources with Congressman Owens and his District Director Nathaniel Johnson. Joined by his district director Nathaniel Johnson, the first-term congressman indicated he was very impressed with all that Millcreek is doing, particularly the rising city center in a federally qualified Opportunity Zone. “Let me know if there is anything with which we can be of support,” he told Mayor Silvestrini.
