The story of the work done by the February 2022 UPD Officer of the Month Detective Danny Diel was remarkable. On February 7th, a UHaul truck backed into Hyland Cyclery, creating a large hole through which four suspects stole eight high end mountain bikes with a total value of $43,000. The theft took place in under two minutes. The UHaul truck, which had been stolen, was found abandoned. A couple of days later, Detective Diel visited Fairmont Park in an area where stolen bicycles have frequently been located. As he was in the area, he noticed a woman wearing a large hat covered with small mirrors standing on the S-line platform. While she was not a suspect in the burglary, her hat was distinctive. Later, reviewing the surveillance video from Hyland Cyclery, Detective Diel noticed two people looking in the front window of the business earlier in the day before the theft and saw that one had been wearing the same hat he had seen on the S-line platform. With the assistance of UTA police, Detective Diel located the woman wearing the hat. On questioning, she gave the names and possible location of several suspects. Detective Diel visited that location and was able to detain three of the four suspects and recover six of the eight bikes. These suspects provided the first name and a telephone number for a fourth suspect. With the help of other police jurisdictions, that suspect was also located. He advised where to find the remaining two bicycles. All of the bicycles were returned to Hyland Cyclery, and the four suspects were arrested and charged with numerous felonies. Our officers undertake this type of work every day. We felt that the story of Detective Diel, his persistence, coordination with other agencies, and his high level of work, provides an excellent example of how these officers assist city residents and businesses every day. ---PAGE BREAK--- The resolution of this case with all suspects located and all of the stolen bikes returned to Hyland Cyclery provided the best possible outcome. Their stories and passion to support Ukraine were uplifting and heartbreaking. Galyna, Alina, Sergei, Anna and others helped us better understand just what their families and friends are going through. The Ukranian Association has set up a Venmo account for those who wish to donate to their efforts to assist families inside Ukraine. $1,991.00 was collected at the event, 100% of which will go to groceries and basic necessities for residents of Kyiv. You can also help by contributing to the International Rescue Committee, which has crews on the ground in Poland and other European countries providing refugee services. The IRC will also be assisting with the relocation of refugees that are expected to resettle in America. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and donated. For those unable to attend, please consider a donation to the IRC or the Ukrainian Association Venmo account. ---PAGE BREAK--- Learn More & Register HERE ---PAGE BREAK--- If a storm drain near your property looks like this one, please take a minute to clean it out. As you go through this annual ritual, please remember to discard yard waste in your green or black can. Do not brush, blow or hose those old leaves into the street where they will end up in a storm drain, potentially causing street flooding or even flooding onto private property. The city tries to get a street sweeper to every city street twice a year but your help, especially at this time of year, is very much appreciated. ---PAGE BREAK--- HEADS UP MILLCREEKERS!
