We will use those additional funds to augment the fine services we currently receive from the Millcreek Precinct of the Unified Police Department. With our new funding, we will be gaining six new full-time officers, including their equipment, cars, radios, and training. One will be joining the DEA/Metro Narcotics team. The other five will be deployed this spring on the streets of Millcreek as our new Community Crimes Suppression Unit (“CCSU”). The CCSU will be directed from time to time to specific areas of the city to target the most prevalent and pressing criminal activity occurring at the time. For example, say there’s an uptick of auto burglaries in the Canyon Rim area. The CCSU will saturate the area with patrols, perhaps for several days, in an effort to catch the bad guys. Or speeding—we all know that is a big problem in many parts of our city. Don’t be surprised on a school day to see five marked police cars doing nothing but traffic enforcement. Homeless camps, drug houses, vandalism—in addition to the day-to-day patrol and investigative police services we already receive, the CCSU will give our Millcreek police the ability to provide customized services tailored to what statistics and analytics show to be the most pressing crime-de-jour. The CCSU will be joining the 29 patrol officers and three traffic/motor officers already deployed on the streets of Millcreek. Many thanks to all of them, and to our six street crime investigators, two community policing officers, two school resource officers, a victim advocate, a half-dozen sergeants, an executive officer, Precinct Chief Steven DeBry, and several civilians (including our active Citizens’ Advisory Board), for the valuable policing services you all provide to the citizens of Millcreek.
