Millcreek, together with Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, Midvale, Murray, and Taylorsville, are developing a joint active transportation plan to establish better options for traveling around in our cities. "Active transportation", according to the CDC, is "any self-propelled, human-powered mode of transportation, such as walking or bicycling." It also includes expanded access to transportation networks so people can more easily get around without cars. The Mid-Valley Active Transportation Network is a coalition of these six cities, which will study the issues and potential solutions, talk to citizens, and then create a plan for regional connections where our residents will be able to walk, bike, ride scooters, and better access public transportation. The plan will connect along the shared city boundaries, but will also address needs specific to each community. The goals of the Mid-Valley Active Transportation Network include: Developing an implementable project list. Improving access to key origins and destinations. Prioritizing safe routes for all users. Completing a connected backbone network. Collaborating for public and multi-city commitment. Click here for more information about the Plan and some of the data that's been collected already about existing facilities, where bike trips are occurring, the current use of public transportation, sites of bike and pedestrian crashes from 2014 to 18, and so forth. As a part of the initial collaboration goals, the Network is asking residents for their perceptions about barriers to active transportation and ideas for solutions. Please click on the button below to take the short survey. Failing Storm Drains Throughout Millcreek Are Ubiquitous MILLCREEK. The last construction season was a banner year in our new city for emergency storm drain repairs. Millcreek receives many calls from across the city about storm drain problems during one week last fall there were three separate storm drain collapses that created emergencies. Many of these problems can be temporarily patched and then put on a list for a more permanent repair in the future. Some, however, are bigger problems that require more extensive and expensive repairs. Two of these major storm drain projects are currently funded: Hillside Drive and Central Avenue, The Hillside Lane construction started last week. The invisible underground problems that were causing flooding at Hillside Lane became very visible when construction began. The storm drain pipe was eight feet underground. When the construction crew started digging, they discovered that the sides of the pipe had completely disappeared, so what was left of the top had collapsed into the bottom. The compacted dirt under the asphalt was all that was holding the road up. ---PAGE BREAK--- This project on Hillside Lane highlights the difficulty of failing storm drains throughout Millcreek. The Central Avenue storm drain project is next but there will be many more to come. These pipe remnants are sections of what was left of a storm drain beneath Hillside Lane.
