Although we don't see them, they're constantly at work helping our city. In almost everything we do, they impact our lives. They help keep our streets clear and clean. The unsung heroes? Storm drains. But they can't do everything on their own. It's ---PAGE BREAK--- 8/19/2019 Oh, the things that you'll see when your storm drainage seeps. 2/14 Planning Commission Weds., 8/21/19,M 5 PM Millcreek City Hall 3330 S. 1300 E. See agenda below Click here for our Calendar of Events important to keep our storm drains in good, working condition. In order to do that in the best and most effective way possible, Millcreek has taken action. After incorporation, we completed a study of all of our storm drains based on what we could see from the surface. That was helpful, but most of the storm drains that we inherited from the County are very old A lot like old people, what's going on inside old storm drains is critical to their health. So we've started to take a deeper look literally. Our storm drain engineers have borrowed a camera drone from Taylorsville. Using the camera drone, we have begun a systematic survey of the conditions inside of all sewers and storm drains in Millcreek. The camera drone has shown us some interesting and sometimes serious concerns, including the fact that many are failing. It's going to take major funding to upgrade all of the storm drains in Millcreek that are failing. We are constantly looking for funding sources to help. Unfortunately, for now, we first have to address those drains that are currently causing flooding or roadway damage. These kinds of emergencies means that at times we have had to move available funds away from other projects, such as sidewalks. The use of the camera drone will help us down the line in identifying and prioritizing projects as funds become available. We want to be able to fix small problems before they become big ones. ---PAGE BREAK--- 8/19/2019 Oh, the things that you'll see when your storm drainage seeps. 3/14 Monday is Millcreek Kids' First Day of School MILLCREEK. Kids often hate it, parents usually love it, but however you feel about it, the Granite School District schools will be back in session on Monday, August 19th. This means that Millcreek youngsters on their way to and from school will be walking along sidewalks and the sides of roadways, and that traffic around our schools will be busy. Please be careful and keep a watchful eye out--make sure the kids are safe! The UPD wants to let you know that officers will be out in force handing out tickets to speeding or distracted drivers. Stay aware! Click here for the Granite School District 2019-20 calendar. TIPS FOR MOSQUITO PREVENTION MILLCREEK. As the heat increases in the summer, so do the mosquitoes. Millcreek residents living near standing water (such as persistent puddles or ---PAGE BREAK--- 8/19/2019 Oh, the things that you'll see when your storm drainage seeps. 4/14 backyard ponds) tend to have more issues with these pests. Thankfully, something can be done. Control standing water in your neighborhood and yard-- or even consider removing it altogether. If ponds and ornamental water features are regularly emptied and cleaned, the possibility of mosquitoes being able to complete their life cycle and reproduce-- thus adding to the number of pests-- will drastically decrease. Cut your plants regularly because even too-thick shrubbery or grass can be a home for mosquitoes. Plant mosquito-repelling plants like lemongrass, and lavender. Mosquitos don't like them. Install mosquito-repelling outdoor lights. Sodium lamps, yellow bug lights, or LED bulbs will all do the trick. Click here for more DIY tips. If none of these remedies work for your mosquito problem, take a look at the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District's website. They service Millcreek south of 3300 South, and provide services such as installing mosquito-eating fish for ponds and mosquito traps. Nobody likes to spend all summer dealing with mosquitoes. Take these simple steps and prevent them in your yard and neighborhood today. MILL CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEEDS YOUR HELP TO GET KIDS ENROLLED IN THEIR SPANISH LANGUAGE DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM GRANITE SCHOOL DISTRICT. Dual Language Immersion is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese. Because of the teaching strategies used, the students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language. The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target world language such as Spanish, French, or Chinese while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah core testing. Furthermore students will develop a world cultural sensitivity. We strive to prepare Granite School District students academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our global community. ---PAGE BREAK--- 8/19/2019 Oh, the things that you'll see when your storm drainage seeps. 9/14 The Dual Language Immersion program in Granite School District begins in first grade and students continue to take courses in the target language through graduation, with a goal of college and career readiness in two languages.
