10/13/23 - MOVING DAY; CHIEF DEBRY RETIRES; HARVEST MARKET; EVENTS; OCT BUSINESS OF THE MONTH; etc. View this email in your browser For more than six years, City Hall has been operating out of a rented strip mall. We will finally be moving to our new, permanent home over the course of two weekends starting next Friday. Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS Planning Commission Wed., 10/18/23 Regular Meeting 5 pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E Watch livestream HERE NEWS City Hall Move Begins Next Week MILLCREEK. We moved into our rented strip mall facility in August of 2017, several months after incorporation. The space gave us a home while we got our city set up and running. Now, after years of planning and two years of construction, the new City Hall at 1330 E Chambers Avenue is ready to become our permanent home. City employees will be moving into the new space in two phases--employees that will be working on the 5th floor (primarily Planning & Zoning, Building & Code, Business Licensing, and Finance & Human Resources) will be moving ---PAGE BREAK--- on Friday, October 20th; employees working on the 2nd and 4th floors (Reception, Communications, Public Works, Promise Program, Mayor, and City Manager) will be moving Friday, October 27th. If you have ever experienced moving into a new space, you know that the process is never quite a smooth as you would have hoped. Belongings get damaged, electronics won't connect to the internet, furniture needs to be pieced back together, etc. While we will be working hard to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, we anticipate there will be many hiccups along the way. We will be getting used to our new offices just as much as our residents will, so we ask for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new space. City services such as Building Permits & Inspection Requests, Business License Applications, Planning & Zoning Applications, Public Works Permits, and Report a Concern are all designed to be done completely online through our website, millcreek.us. We encourage everyone to get familiar with our website and explore its many helpful features. If you need to speak with a member of city staff between October 20th and October 27th, we strongly encourage you to call or email the staffer you need to speak with and set up an appointment. We will have staffers from each department divided between the new and current City Hall during that week, and we want to ensure your questions get answered The new City Hall was designed with resident input to be economical and environmentally sustainable, and to provide an inviting and functional place for gathering and community building. This is an exciting chapter in Millcreek's history, and we can't wait to share our new home with our residents! Please join us for the Grand Opening Celebration on November 16th from 4-8 PM. There will be food from local vendors, live entertainment, a fireworks show, and free skating! ---PAGE BREAK--- ---PAGE BREAK--- Millcreek Precinct Chief DeBry Retires MILLCREEK. After 42 years in law enforcement, Steve DeBry, chief of the Millcreek Precinct of the Unified Police Department, is retiring effective October 16, 2023. In addition, we strive to give back to our community by hosting events for a variety of causes such as ALS, Wildlands Network, NAMI,Carmen Pingree School for Autism, Utah Food Bank, Pamela Atkinson Resource Center, Pay it Back foundation, as well as donations to many of the local schools for their fundraisers. Green Living Tips for Fall Article courtesy of Earth 911 As the brilliant colors of early fall fade in the northern U.S. states, many of us are preparing for the long winter ahead. In between dusting off our snow boots and digging out our favorite cozy sweaters, we can take some time to think about living sustainably in the cooler season. With shorter daylight hours and lower temperatures, you may find yourself turning on more lights at home or taking long, hot baths. Of course, we all know that the same rules apply year-round when it comes to turning off lights and taking shorter showers to conserve water. Here are a few other friendly green living reminders for fall. Preserve Your Garden Goodies Before the first frost hits your vegetable garden, preserve as much of your harvest as possible. In case you haven’t heard, canning is cool again, and for good reason. Canning provides you with fruits and vegetables during the months when they can’t be grown in your region. This helps you reduce your reliance on produce shipped in from distant warm- weather climates (which adds to your carbon footprint). If you’ve been growing herbs, The Spruce has some tips for drying and storing herbs for use throughout the colder months. Check Your Tires ---PAGE BREAK--- Cooler temperatures can lower tire pressure and under-inflated tires reduce your car’s fuel efficiency. It takes just a few minutes to inflate your tires to the proper pressure and it’s well worth the grimy fingers. And while you’re at it, check your car service records; is it time to rotate your tires yet? By regularly rotating your tires, you make sure your tires wear evenly. Regular rotation can extend your tire life and improve your gas mileage. Clean and Test Your Furnace Did you know that your furnace needs regular cleaning? Throughout the year, it collects lots of dust and debris, both of which can affect the furnace’s performance and could even cause a fire. Clean out or replace your furnace filter regularly and get your furnace serviced by a professional before the cold weather calls. Bring In the Houseplants If your houseplants spent the summer outside, don’t forget to bring them in before it gets too cold. If you don’t have any houseplants, maybe now is a good time to consider getting one or two. Not only do plants brighten up the interior of your home, but they may reduce stress and improve air quality. Since most of us in cooler climates open the windows less frequently in the winter, houseplants can do a lot to improve your indoor air quality. Do Some Yard Work If you have a yard, spend some time getting it ready for the winter. Scoop up any fallen leaves and use them in the garden as mulch to protect plants throughout the winter — or add them to your compost pile. Fall is the time to plant spring bulbs and some perennials. And you can also plant many types of trees and shrubs in the fall, which will give them enough time to develop a deep root system over the winter months and reduce their water needs come spring. Hibernate Responsibly We all love the coziness that candles provide during the cooler months, but did you know that most candles on the market are made from paraffin wax, a product of petroleum refining? A more environmentally friendly choice is candles made from beeswax — even better if you can find them at a local market or craft fair to avoid the carbon costs of shipping. Be sure to do your research before you stock up on products that make you feel cozy during the fall and winter. ---PAGE BREAK--- While the Chief's wife, Lorraine, looks on, Mayor Silvestrini gives retiring Chief Steve DeBry a thank you hug and a recognition present at the City Council meeting last Monday. Steve served as the Millcreek UPD Chief both before and after incorporation until his retirement this month. He considers Millcreek to be his "HOMETOWN!" The city is grateful for his strong and confident leadership. Meetings with the Mayor Fridays from 2-4pm have been set aside for citizens to meet with Mayor Jeff Silvestrini.
