04-09-21: RANKED CHOICE VOTING; MASKS; ADUs; WATER; MORE WATER; HOMELESS SHELTER UPDATE; etc. View this email in your browser What is Ranked Choice Voting and how does it work? Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS City Council Wed., 4/12/21 Work Session 5 PM Regular Meeting 7PM 3330 S 1300 E Thurs., 4/15/21, 5 PM City Council & Planning Commission Special NEWS Will the Upcoming Millcreek Election Become the City's First Ranked Choice Voting Election? MILLCREEK. This past session, the Utah Legislature expanded a pilot program that allows local governments to try out Ranked Choice Voting. To participate, a municipality government must vote to conduct a "multi-candidate race" for its elections, and then notify the lieutenant governor before the 2d Monday in May of any odd-numbered year. See HB75 Municipal Alternative Voting Methods Pilot Project ---PAGE BREAK--- Work Meeting 3330 S 1300 E Agendas Below Meetings will be virtual Click here for link to Live Stream Amendments. Millcreek has two City Council seats up for election this year District 2 (Dwight Marchant) and District 4 (Bev Uipi). At their work meeting on Monday, 4/12/21, the City Council will be discussing whether to implement Ranked Choice Voting for that election. Click here to watch the live stream of the meeting. If the Council determines to use Ranked Choice Voting for this election, there will be no primary election. Instead, all candidates will be on the ballot in the general election. If the City Council chooses to go with a traditional election, the candidate declaration period will be June 1-7. If the Council chooses to go with Ranked Choice Voting, it will be August 10-17. The Council will make a final decision by the end of April 2021. Click here for contact information of our city council representatives to send in your comments on whether Millcreek should adopt Ranked Choice Voting. WHAT IS RANKED CHOICE VOTING? Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank their choices in order of preference, marking candidates as their first, second and third choice. The winner must have a majority of more than 50% of the vote rather than simply the most votes. If no candidate wins an outright majority of the votes, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated and a new tally is conducted to determine whether any candidates has won an outright majority of the adjusted voters. The process is repeated until a candidate wins a majority of votes cast. Ranked Choice Voting eliminates the need for a primary election. Click on the video above for a visual explanation of the process. Click here for more information. MASKS IN MILLCREEK ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Millcreek will be following the guidance of the Salt Lake County Health Department and not continuing its mask mandate after the statewide mask mandate is removed tomorrow, April 10th. We encourage Millcreek residents to continue wearing masks if they are not vaccinated or if they are in groups of people who are not vaccinated. Businesses have the right to require masks, so please be respectful if you are asked to wear a mask when visiting a business. The state still requires masks at events with more than 50 people and for children in school until the end of the school year. Please continue to mask up when appropriate, wash your hands, follow COVID guidelines and get your shot. We are nearing the end of this long dark tunnel; let's focus on the light at the end. ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (ADU) PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION CITY COUNCIL AND PLANNING COMMISSION JOINT SPECIAL WORK MEETING THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 5:00 PM CLICK HERE FOR LIVE STREAM Wait! Wait! Don't Water Yet! Remember, we’re in a drought and we need to save water wherever, whenever we can. And right now, we can save water! Ok, so you’re thinking...It’s a gorgeous day outside and I want to do yard work. Make Your Vaccination Appointment HERE ---PAGE BREAK--- What can I do? Well, don’t do anything that has to do with your sprinklers. Actually, most turf is still dormant (looks kinda dead and brown) and is slowly waking up (you’ll have patches of brown and green) from its winter nap. The Utah Division of Water Resources is recommending that residents in Salt Lake County wait to water until May. Check their website to view the weekly Lawn Watering Guide, get a free water check, sign up for Utah's water-wise pledge or learn more about water conservation. One way to help with water conservation is to set up a rain barrel in your yard to catch and use rainwater. The Millcreek Rain Barrel program is offering subsidized rain barrels to our residents. There has been a remarkable response and barrels are almost sold out (for the second time). Get yours on the Utah Rivers Council website before they are gone again. ---PAGE BREAK--- TEMPORARY HOMELESS SHELTER SUCCESSFUL MILLCREEK: The Temporary Homeless Shelter that was opened this past winter on 3300 S to provide housing and COVID protections for members of the unsheltered community will be closing on April 15th, in keeping with the agreement made with the City. We carefully monitored this facility and are pleased to report that it was well run. Half of the clients ---PAGE BREAK--- are now in permanent housing. There was no increase in crime in the area. We are happy that Millcreek was able to assist during the last few difficult months. "I'm extremely honored and humbled by this recognition," said Principal Drummond, “I have the best job in the world because I get to interact with the incredible students, staff and parents in the Oakridge community on a daily basis." "There is no one more deserving of [this award] than our very own Mrs. Drummond. She is an extraordinary example of a compassionate leader who centers her efforts around providing the best to each child at Oakridge," remarked Oakridge PTA President, Anne Crawford. Congratulations Principal Drummond!! Best of Luck, Principal Kane! MILLCREEK. Mill Creek Elementary Principal Ann Kane will be transferring to Farnsworth Elementary at the end of this school year.
