See agenda below NEWS Neff's Creek Jumped its Banks this Morning MILLCREEK. For those who may doubt that a large portion of Millcreek’s Mount Olympus neighborhood is a flood plain, Mother Nature provided a rude reminder this morning. Spring run-off, combined with six inches of heavy, wet ---PAGE BREAK--- 5/20/2019 Neff's Creek jumped its banks this morning 2/10 View our Community Calendar here snow and rainfall caused a debris flow in Neff’s Creek. The debris flow caused the creek to jump its channel, and the excess water began to run into the creek's old, original channel. Neff's Creek's original channel runs through yards and homes in the Mount Olympus neighborhood, all of the way down into Mill Creek at the bottom of Mill Creek Canyon. There was flooding in some yards and heavy runoff into streets and storm water facilities. Such unpredictability is the hallmark of an alluvial fan like Olympus Cove. While this was still a minor event, it foreshadows what the flood plain maps predict and demonstrates the problem we would have in an exceptional storm event at high runoff. Many thanks to Millcreek’s Emergency Management, Code Enforcement, and Storm Water personnel, as well as to employees of Salt Lake County Flood Control and Public Works for jumping into action to address this event. These crews sandbagged 35 to 40 homes and driveways all the way from Zarahemla Drive at the top of the Cove to the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon to protect our residents and their property from further flood damage. Through their timely action, wading through snow and rain, major damage was avoided—this time. Does your home have defensible space around it to help protect it from a devastating wildfire? After this winter's endless snow and rain, the grass, brush and trees along the suburban–open space interface of our community will grow rapidly. Unfortunately, this will soon turn to wildfire tinder. We should all prepare our homes and neighborhoods for the potential wildfires to come. Pull on your gloves and fire up your chainsaws, because starting in June, crews from United Fire Authority and Utah Department of Natural Resources will be chipping roadside brush piles into landscape mulch. Any material up to 8 inches in diameter that we clear from our properties and pile at the roadside edge will be chipped. To start our program, only brush piles in the highest risk area along the red line shown in the map above will be chipped. As the program progresses, a more detailed map and more instructions will be put on the Millcreek website. For those of you along the roadway: Pile your brush by the roadside by Wednesday June 5th. We won't be able to service driveways and will make only one pass through the neighborhood. Material brought to the road after crews have passed will not be chipped. ---PAGE BREAK--- 5/20/2019 Neff's Creek jumped its banks this morning 5/10 Stack your brush in a single direction with the large end out so that the pile is easy to chip. Be careful to not obstruct road shoulders or bike lanes. Every household should reassess its own fire preparedness: Is your house fire-hardened and protected by defensible perimeters? Have you subscribed to the reverse 9-1-1 service with the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center? Have you made and practiced an evacuation plan? VENTURE OUT THIS SUMMER - IT'S ALMOST HERE!
