Announcements UPCOMING PUBLIC MEETINGS City Council & Community Reinvestment Agency NEWS SUNNYVALE PARK'S NEW GARDEN BOXES ARE NOW UP AND RUNNING MILLCREEK. Millcreek is fortunate to be able to partner with New Roots, a program developed by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to manage 14 new community garden boxes at ---PAGE BREAK--- Mon., 6/22/20 Work meeting, 5 pm Regular meeting, 7 pm City Hall 3330 S 1300 E Agenda below Sunnyvale Park. The New Roots program enables refugees to celebrate their heritage and nourish themselves and their neighbors by planting strong roots—literally—in their new communities. New Roots provides seeds, starts, tools and technical assistance for refugee gardeners to be able to grow culturally-familiar food for themselves and their families here in Utah. At the Sunnyvale Community Garden, neighboring families will be able to use the garden boxes. Our partners at New Roots tell us that two families who live in the apartments across from the park have been producing at a different garden for several years. They were very excited to be able to access a garden plot closer to their homes this year. The other families who will be growing in the park this year heard about the garden through outreach at the Sunnyvale Farmers Market last season, through word of mouth from other gardeners, or through posters that were put up at the apartments near the park. Gardeners at Sunnyvale Community Garden are from Burundi, Nepal, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bhutan, Bosnia, and Afghanistan. In addition to the common crops such as tomatoes, peppers, corn, and beans, gardeners have planted the following vegetable varieties that are less commonly found in grocery stores in Utah: Mustard greens - A favorite spring crop to plant for Nepali/Bhutanese gardeners. Amaranth - Thought of as a fairly common weed in the U.S., many gardeners saute the leaves of this plant to eat. Bitter Melon - A gourd with spikes that many of Nepali/Bhutanese and Burmese grow that is known for lowering high blood pressure. Thai Pumpkin - Many gardeners grow these for the pumpkin, but also to peel and cook the pumpkin shoots on the plant. Thai Chili - A small, and very spicy chili. African Eggplant - An eggplant variety that is smaller than a tennis ball, that many of our clients from Burundi, DRC, and Tanzania prefer to cook with. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS!! We are so proud of our graduated Millcreek Youth Council members! These twelve incredible students served our community selflessly throughout ---PAGE BREAK--- the past year, and we can't thank them enough for all their hard work. We will miss our graduates, and wish them the very best in their future endeavors! MILLCREEK. The Millcreek City Council recently passed a Resolution honoring World Refugee Day and Juneteenth. Here are some reasons why – World Refugee Day — established by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec. 4, 2000 — is an annual commemoration to celebrate the strength and resilience of the refugee communities throughout the world, recognize the struggles faced by displaced populations, and raise awareness about refugee issues. In 2020, World Refugee Day falls on Saturday, June 20th. Join the celebration on the IRC website here. Approximately 60,000 Refugees live in Utah. The vast majority reside in Salt Lake County and represent countries such as Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Iraq, Vietnam, the former Soviet Union, and Burma. Salt Lake City schools with large refugee populations report over 30 languages spoken. With 1319 arriving in 2016 alone! Who helps refugees resettle in Utah? In Utah there are two resettlement agencies: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Catholic Community ---PAGE BREAK--- Services (CCS). One of which is a Millcreek Promise Partner. These resettlement agencies are the most important source of information and assistance during the refugees’ first months in the United States. In addition to making sure that refugees are welcomed at the airport; they arrange for their housing, furniture and basic household supplies; conducts orientation; referrals to social services & employment- and hosts things like the World Refugee Festival that is 16 years strong in Utah! Juneteenth Freedom Day — In 2016, the Utah Legislature deemed the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth Freedom Day, and 46 other states have similar commemorations. Juneteenth began on June 19, 1865 — with the two-word “June 19th” eventually contracted into “Juneteenth.” Slaves in Galveston, Texas, were the last in the nation still enslaved. When Union General Gordon Granger arrived, he called townspeople together that day to read an order freeing the slaves, forcibly removing them, and ending the practice of specifically chattel slavery in America. Afterward, “The slaves had a huge celebration,” and called it the day of jubilee, a biblical term for a time every 50 years when debts are forgiven, and slaves set free. Juneteenth is about forgiveness and healing. It has been hosted by the Utah Juneteenth Freedom & Heritage Foundation for 31 years strong in Utah! An estimated, 33,000 Black African Americans live in Utah. 17,949 lived Salt Lake County in 2016 alone! In 2065, it is projected that Utah will be home to 124,730 members of the Black community- making 2.8% of the Utah population. A good portion of Black African Americans Utah work in higher education, financing services, health service industries, and municipal & government affairs. The Census Bureau projects immigration from sub-Saharan Africa to increase considerably in the latter half of the twentieth century. These shifts in immigrant origins are primarily a product of robust population growth in Asia and sub- Saharan Africa. Together (Africans and Black African Americans)- our largest age groups are 5- 24 years old. Utah's minority populations are younger than the non-Hispanic White population. 35 percent of the minority population was under 18 in 2016 and they made up 28.2 percent of Salt Lake County in 2016. Green Flake Ancestors ---PAGE BREAK--- We asked Kellen Perkins, an ancestor of Green Flake, a black Mormon pioneer who helped settle the East Mill Creek area what Juneteenth Freedom Day means to her. “What does Juneteenth mean to me? I wish I could say something simple like freedom and be done. However, the fabric and complexities of the repercussions of slavery are not simple and cannot be summed up in one short answer. Many could point to this picture and think we are the epitome of success after the freeing of Slaves; Pictured are Doctors, Corporate Executives, Small Business Owners, and Law Enforcement officers but the truth is, our journey was long and hard and only made easier because Green Flake was freed prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. Green Flake’s freedom and move to the Rockies, allowed him to own property in (Millcreeks’ Evergreen Neighborhood) which is the largest contributor to generational wealth- something that was not afforded to Slaves from southern states. Despite an immense amount of privilege, our family’s presence in East Mill Creek was not met without micro-aggressions, blatant racism, and a plethora of other injustices; yet through all of this: Still We Rise!! -Kellen Perkins” ---PAGE BREAK--- Business License Administrator Alex Wendt works hard to assist Millcreek’s 1,000+ licensed businesses. ADJUSTMENTS IN BUSINESS LICENSE FEES PROPOSED MILLCREEK. Millcreek has partnered with Zions Public Finance to conduct the first business license fee study since the city’s incorporation. The results are guiding an update to the fee schedule that more accurately reflects the true cost of licensing. “For some types of businesses, they may see a slight increase, but for most they will see a savings,” said Alex Wendt, Millcreek Business License Administrator. For an example, Alex points to the basic business license fee that will reduce from $150 annually to $145. Another change is the removal of the $6 per employee charge that the city inherited when it adopted Salt Lake County ordinances. The employee charge is being replaced by a fee that better reflects which types of businesses utilize more police resources. “This will be much more fair and equitable for our business community and more precisely capture the city’s true cost of providing services,” said Alex. The Mayor and City Council will consider adopting these recommendations in their City Council meeting on June 22. ---PAGE BREAK--- Fireworks & Pets A message from Salt Lake County Animal Services: Keep your pet safe during fireworks season. Throughout July, Salt Lake County Animal Services sees an increase in lost pets due to the number of pets who escape from their homes or yards because of the noisy fireworks. Here are a few tips to make sure your pet stays safe: Be sure your pet is wearing its ID tag and that the info is up-to date. Keep windows and doors closed; we often hear of pets breaking out screens when they get scared. Leave your pet at home when you head out to set off or see fireworks. Don’t leave them in the car, it’s too hot and too noisy. They would prefer to be at home with a tasty treat or food puzzle. Provide a safe place for them to retreat (hide) when the fireworks start going off. Close bedroom doors to prevent them from getting stuck under beds. Take them to the basement, turn on some mellow music, and snuggle with them. Take your dog for a walk earlier in the day before the fireworks start. If you find a lost pet, contact Animal Control Dispatch at [PHONE REDACTED] to have an officer come get the animal. Salt Lake County Animal Services is located at 511 W 3900 S, SLC, 84123. Questions? Email [EMAIL REDACTED] or call 385- 468-7387. ---PAGE BREAK--- HERE IS A LIST OF MILLCREEK BUSINESSES THAT HAVE TOLD US OF THEIR SAFETY PRACTICES AND SERVICES OFFERED DURING THE COVID19 PANDEMIC MILLCREEK.
