For the fourth year running, the Historic Baldwin Radio Factory and Evergreen Park and picnic pavilion on the south side of the library will play host to the Millcreek Arts Festival, a one-day celebration of artistic expression. Admission to the festival is free of charge. Featuring artists and craftworkers of all mediums, the festival will draw together over 35 booths in addition to the 16 resident art studios. Artists will include workers of jewelry, ceramics, watercolor, glass, photography, and mixed media. Resident artists will open their studios for touring and guest artists will display and sell their latest creations in outdoor booths. Jared Smith, painter and creator of the image of this year’s festival poster, will be on hand with his stirring and expressive portraits of wild animals. Festival goers, especially youth, are encouraged to dive into hands-on activities and utilize provided paints and surfaces to create new images to adorn and decorate the setting. Food will be available for purchase at three hosted food trucks, and also our own local Roots Café. Live music will play all day long, with acts on two different stages. Millcreek was a finalist this week for the Utah Ethical Leadership Award for Government, awarded by the University of Utah Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative and the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. The award recognizes integrity, trust, accountability, transparency, fairness, respect, rule of law and viability in government in the state of Utah. Millcreek was recognized for its transparency and efforts to engage the public in connection with the recent truth in taxation process, in which we explained how the tax source for police funding was changed over to the city, and also for public engagement in planning for growth. Our entire city council and key staff members accepted the award this morning. Millcreek was also favorably recognized as a leader in transparency and responsive government in an opinion piece which ran in the Deseret News on August 31, 2018. Click here to read the full article. The author suggested that Millcreek offered a great example of responsive government in our efforts to engage the public in sometimes difficult discussions about how to accommodate the incredible growth our state is experiencing, by including residents early in the decision-making process regarding new development and planning. We are grateful for this recognition, and we will continue to strive to be responsive and transparent with Millcreek residents to earn and retain your ---PAGE BREAK--- 3/27/2019 A new city expresses itself 4/12 trust. None of us want to have to walk out in the street when there is a perfectly good sidewalk that can’t be used because weeds and shrubs are blocking or covering it. And, none of us want to be in an accident because we couldn’t see a STOP sign or can’t see an approaching intersection. And, none of us want to spend time searching for an address because the street signs are covered up by over- grown trees. The city depends on residents to keep their trees and shrubs trimmed and cleared so everyone can safely use our sidewalks and streets. City ordinance requires that shrubbery along sidewalks shall be cleared to the edge of the sidewalk and that there should be a minimum of 8 feet of clearance above a sidewalk. Ordinance also requires that vegetation be kept cut back along roadways and that a minimum of 13 ½ feet of clearance be kept open above roads. Vegetation at intersecting streets is required to be no higher than 2 feet for a minimum of 300’ back from corners. Our code compliance inspectors keep an eye out for these dangerous conditions and will send a reminder to the property owner when they see a problem, but our inspectors cannot be everywhere. Please help by taking care of any of these issues on your property and if you do receive a courtesy notice, remember that these issues can be easily resolved if everyone pitches in. If you notice a concern that you feel should be addressed, you can send the ---PAGE BREAK--- 3/27/2019 A new city expresses itself 8/12 information to the city so we can take a look. Residents can report concerns to us on the city website at Millcreek.us by scrolling down on the main page to “Have a Concern, Let Us Know”.
