Thirty-plus years ago, Dr. Narayani P. Singh asked his dad to help him build a girls school in rural India. Reflecting centuries-old tradition that boys come first, his dad asked, "Why would you ever want to teach girls?" ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/21/2019 Millcreek Philanthropist Awarded Honorary Doctorate 2/13 3330 S 1300 E See agenda below Click here for our Calendar of Events Using his own funds and friends' donations, Dr. Singh built a small building on land that, after much discussion, he'd convinced his father to donate. Dr Singh's dad even became the school's first principal, leading 120 girls in grades 6-11. The Gramyanchal Mahila Vidyapeeth (GMV) school in rural Ganga Pur, India, has grown to almost 3,000 students studying at levels ranging from kindergarten to post-college graduate degrees. The school's mission is to "empower rural girls in India by providing a high-quality education, with qualified teachers, at a cost their rural families can afford." Many years ago, local Millcreek resident Arline Hawkins Ockey caught the bug to help these girls. Ever since, she has been providing scholarships for village girls who cannot afford even the small fees the GMV charges. "I have a very strong conviction that children need to read and be exposed to good literature. I firmly believe that girls should be educated. I'm very impressed with what these girls do, and with the subjects they take math, engineering, and more. I'm amazed at what they do." Arline Hawkins Ockey Mrs. Ockey raised six kids in the Mt. Olympus area of Millcreek. She has been active in local politics, and served as the drama director for her church. She loves working with children and young people. With Mrs. Ockey's help, many many young women in India have been able to take a wide range of classes, become educated, and create better lives for themselves and their families. Last week, the GMV awarded Mrs. Ockey an Honorary Doctorate for her contributions. In a congratulatory letter, Mayor Jeff Silvestrini told her, "You are an inspiration and role model to those around you. Your dedication to mentoring young people is evident in your receiving this esteemed commendation." He went on to tell Mrs. Ockey that Millcreek was proud to call her one of our own. You would expect dimmed lights and blaring music at a Halloween dance, but at this unique dance the lights won’t be dimmed, and there will be ear-plugs handed out at each entrance to the gym! The Millcreek Youth Council and Jean Massieu School for the Deaf and Blind (JMS) have partnered to bring a dance to Millcreek that will welcome all students in Millcreek blind, deaf, seeing, and hearing. After many months of ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/21/2019 Millcreek Philanthropist Awarded Honorary Doctorate 8/13 preparation, their Nightmare on 23rd stomp will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd! This dance will be accommodating to all, especially focusing on the students from JMS. Many of these students travel long commutes to get to school, coming from as far as Ogden, and board at the school from Monday through Friday. At JMS dances, the lights are kept at a level where you can see clearly so that deaf individuals can still communicate by sign language. The music is also turned up to an heightened level so that deaf individuals can feel the vibrations. Hearing individuals will be given ear plugs for their protection. All of the ASL programs from the schools in the surrounding area have been invited, but any and all students in the area are welcome to attend! Both groups hope for a large turnout and know this will be a great opportunity to get to know other students who may be different from themselves. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/21/2019 Millcreek Philanthropist Awarded Honorary Doctorate 9/13 Business Council BOGOs ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/21/2019 Millcreek Philanthropist Awarded Honorary Doctorate 10/13 Print out these coupons or show them on your phone to the merchant to get your Buy One Get One Free.
