Utah's Better Days 2020 committee is hosting an art show in Millcreek this month to commemorate women from all backgrounds in American history who have worked towards suffrage and social equality. Artists ages 12-25 may submit pieces of art highlighting women who inspired them, particularly diverse women in politics and art. Submissions can be formed through drawing, painting, poetry, and photography. In addition to their piece, artists are asked to answer these questions: How did your subject ---PAGE BREAK--- change history? How does she impact you? What was your process in creating the art piece? All entries must be submitted by August 7th to Ashley Cleveland [EMAIL REDACTED], or dropped off at City Hall. Participants will be notified of their selection by August 10. (To address accessibility barriers to entering the art show, Better Days 2020 is working with Clever Octopus to provide art kits for participants). Chosen art will be showcased at the Maliheh Clinic on 941 E. 3300 S in Millcreek starting August 15, with a socially distant viewing from 4 to 6 PM. Pieces also will be displayed on the Better Days 2020 social media page. Better Days 2020 is a Utah initiative to mark the 150th anniversary of Utah women’s suffrage, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment that gave the vote to women throughout the nation, and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which protected the voting rights of women and men of racial minorities. Join us at Millcreek City Hall Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm and pick up something delicious. Millcreek Launches $1.5 Million in Small Business Promotion Grants ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Earlier this week, the City Council unanimously approved the creation of a grant program to reimburse the city’s small retail businesses for up to $5,000 in advertising. As part of the city’s CARES Act Funds distribution, Millcreek is designating $1.5 million available on a first-come-first-served basis, with the intent to help 300 small businesses. “We needed a program to address different business needs than the excellent county and state grant programs,” said Mayor Silvestrini, “and the Millcreek grant program will help affected businesses welcome customers back.” Retail businesses with 95 or fewer employees who suffered financial losses from the pandemic shutdown can use the $5,000 for any legitimate method of advertising. “Our small businesses can use these funds for mailers, digital ads, signage, radio ads, and more,” said the mayor. “We have made this as flexible as possible because these retailers know best what can help them fly.” Millcreek businesses can learn more and apply by clicking HERE. Salt Lake County expands reach of $40M Small Business Impact Grant program to include all business, COVID-19 aid recipients SALT LAKE COUNTY. The County opened its Small Business Impact Grant to businesses closed by COVID-19’s public health orders, with the goal of reaching small businesses forgotten in the rush of initial federal relief. Since June 16, Salt Lake County successfully reached out to thousands of eligible business owners and has awarded $2.4 million in grants to 142 ---PAGE BREAK--- businesses across the County, with $2.1 million in grants requested by businesses still under review. Based on documented losses, the average grant award in the first round was $17,000. During Round 1, Salt Lake County found 45% of the businesses that applied were outside the main industries temporarily closed, but still felt the very real effects of COVID-19 and a need for more support. Another large segment of applicants received federal aid from the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL), but the loans were not enough to sustain businesses through this extended period of the disease’s spread. While economic recovery will continue to be a long-term strategic effort, the County is committed to mitigating short-term effects in its collaborative effort to stabilize the economy. In Round 2 of the SBIG Program, launching immediately, all business industries are eligible to apply, as well as those who received other federal, state, or local COVID-19 aid. Those who received financial aid through CARES Act funding are eligible if their amount did not exceed $35,000. These changes will allow thousands of more businesses to apply and avoid taking on additional debt. “Listening to business owners in the past month, we learned and assessed additional needs required to prevent our small businesses from closing,” said Salt Lake County’s Regional Development Director Dina Blaes. “After meeting the SBIG’s initial goals, this second round is in response to those developing needs. The County is uniquely positioned to pivot more quickly than federal programs, and we aim to get more money into the economy as fast as we can.” The grant cannot be used for duplication of expenses in the same timeframe. It can be used for losses from March 16 to July 31. Applicants with questions are urged to call the County’s Business Relief Hotline, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., at (385) 468-4011. During the first part of August, Salt Lake City Public Utilities will begin work on two waterline projects, one along 3900 S from 3184 E to the I-215 interchange, and one along Upland Drive between Terrace Heights Road and 3100 E. Click on the maps below for additional information on each project. ---PAGE BREAK--- TOMORROW SAT, AUG 1ST ---PAGE BREAK--- FEMA ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR DAMAGES SUFFERED IN EARTHQUAKE DISASTER LAST MARCH Federal disaster assistance from FEMA is available to affected individuals in Davis and Salt Lake County to supplement state and local recovery efforts from the earthquake we suffered last March. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by clicking here to register online or by calling 1-800-621- FEMA(3362) or 1-[PHONE REDACTED] (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. ---PAGE BREAK--- Volunteer Position - (contact information corrected from last week) Millcreek Precinct Volunteer Victim Advocate The Unified Police Department, Millcreek Precinct, is currently seeking qualified individuals for our Volunteer Victim Advocate program. Millcreek Precinct Volunteer Victim Advocates will work alongside our full time Victim Advocate, Community Leaders, and Police Officers. Volunteer Victim Advocates will assist victims of crime through community resources and support victims through the criminal justice process. The Victim Advocate program assists victims and their family members of crime relating to domestic violence, dating violence, child abuse, sexual assault, robbery, stalking/harassment, assault, homicide, suicide, and other traumatic loss. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills. The work schedule will primarily be callouts between 6pm-3am and will be on a set rotation. Some of the Victim Advocate program services include: Referrals to community resources Information about the criminal justice system Provide financial assistance Accompaniment and support in court hearings Prevention work, including public presentations Applicant qualifications: Positive attitude Above average computer skills Ability to prioritize Valid drivers license Must pass a background check Must be at least 21 years of age This is a non-compensated position with no paid benefits.
