Mike Watson, UFA Assistant Chief urges everyone to help keep fire hydrants clear during these snowy winter months. Maintaining a clear and workable space around fire hydrants during the winter months is vital. In general, this responsibility falls on the residents who own or occupy property nearest a hydrant. When responding to structure fires, time is of the essence. Fire departments strive for acceptable response times and it is frustrating when a fire hydrant needs to be cleared of snow or debris before firefighters can engage in water supply ---PAGE BREAK--- 3/27/2019 Fire Hydrants And You 2/10 and suppression tactics to extinguish a fire. If you have a hydrant on or near your property, here are the things you can do to ensure firefighters can connect to the hydrant when needed: Shovel or snow blow 3 feet of space on each side and in the back of fire hydrants. Maintain an open corridor from the street to the front of fire hydrants. These clearings should go all the way to the ground whenever possible, but not less than one foot below the hydrant caps at a minimum. Some neighborhoods organize an Adopt-A-Hydrant program. This creates the awareness for residents to take note of clearing snow from hydrants and maintaining space around them and to help each other with those tasks throughout the winter months. These things can be done when you are already out shoveling or snow blowing your driveways and sidewalks. It has been fixed now, so if you have a little ---PAGE BREAK--- 3/27/2019 Fire Hydrants And You 6/10 time, we'd love your feedback! MILLCREEK. The current sign ordinance for Millcreek was inherited from Salt Lake County and has not been updated for 15-20 years. It is the generic ordinance that covered all the unincorporated areas of the County. The Millcreek General Plan (our community vision process) emphasized the importance of improving the visual quality and creating opportunities for economic development along our corridors and in our centers. More economic activity results in new signs and changes to existing signs. Millcreek would like to have a sign ordinance that is better suited for our unique community needs. In addition to advertising, signs can also impact the safety of streets and the appearance of public spaces. This is why your city is reaching out for feedback to help create a sign ordinance that represents our community values. Please take five minutes to complete the survey: click here Give your input on this important ordinance change and ask others to do so as well! ---PAGE BREAK--- 3/27/2019 Fire Hydrants And You 7/10 MILLCREEK.
