This area sits at one of the main into Millcreek and will welcome visitors to our city. The streetscape will have a number of features, including a brick privacy wall, a sheltered bus stop, public art, street lighting, and lilac bushes. Cotttonwood Partners, which is currently developing two projects on Villa Vista Avenue, purchased the property for the streetscape, and donated it to the City, along with a portion of the construction costs. Residents of the Mountair neighborhood have been requesting improvement of the property since incorporation, not only for the aesthetics but also for the safety of their community. Once lined by beautiful lilacs, the bushes are now are mostly dead. The frontage street, Mountair Drive, has been used frequently by people to park "cars for sale", which is illegal and sometimes dangerous. Each year a fire or two is ignited by the catalytic converters of these illegally-parked cars, or by the flip of a cigarette butt. This past summer, a fire threatened homes and major power lines, and scorched the side of a parked car. Thank you to Cottonwood Partners, and also to all those who have participated in discussions of what you would like the Mountair Streetscape to look like. Your insights were invaluable. We are excited to see the finished product! ---PAGE BREAK--- Spooky Good Food Tomorrow is Millfreaks! SKYLINE SWIMMERS CELEBRATE "20 ACTS OF KINDNESS IN 20 DAYS IN 2020" MILLCREEK. The Skyline Swim Team usually relies on ticket sales from football games for funding. Because of COVID-19, ticket sales have dropped this year, making money scarce. To compensate and help pay for travel expenses and new pool equipment, the swim team is collecting donations for random acts of kindness. As of today, they have raised $12,508 of their $22,500 goal. If you would like to help, you can pledge to sponsor a swimmer and donate based off the number of good deeds they do for the community, or you can submit a donation. CLICK HERE to sponsor a swimmer or donate to the team. ---PAGE BREAK--- Once Upon a Day Camp... MILLCREEK. On October 13th, the Millcreek Youth Council teamed up with Learning for Life to sponsor a Kids Fairytale Day Camp at Camp Tracy. Children who attended were whisked away into fairytales, including Snow White, Jack & the Beanstalk, and The Princess & The Frog. Thank you to our Millcreek Youth Council. We are grateful for their constant examples of enthusiastic volunteerism and hard work. Windstorm Debris Cleanup Along Streams Continues With Help from National Guard ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Our partners at Salt Lake County Flood Control are charged with keeping the streams in Millcreek and throughout the county clear of debris that could create flooding. During the wind storm a few weeks ago, many branches and a lot of debris came down in stream channels across the County, threatening to create logjams and dams. More than 60 service requests came in after the wind storm, with reports of problems along Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, Parleys and Emigration Creeks. This poses a huge task for the normal flood control operations crew of ten people. The majority of the work needs to be done by hand due to limited access, and COVID protocols have made things even more difficult. But the creeks must be clear of large tree falls before spring runoff. Fortunately, arrangements have been made to bring in members of the National Guard to help. The clean up is well underway now as a result. Homeowners are asked to help where they can by either clearing their segment of stream or by reporting the problem at [PHONE REDACTED]. Note that to move things along more quickly at this point, a homeowner who hires a tree removal company to have a tree removed will not have to first obtain a flood control permit. The National Guard and flood control crews can only remove the portions of downed tree or debris that are blocking or has the potential to block creek flow. Trees and debris on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. We are extremely grateful for the efforts of the flood control crew and would like to thank the National Guard members who are helping with this major effort. CONSTRUCTION NOTICE The Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities will be replacing the roof on the Eastwood Pump Station (3650 E Eastwood Dr, Millcreek) in the next few weeks. Assistant City Manager Information Center Technician Mayor Silvestrini raced members of the Skyline Swim Team earlier this week to to help celebrate their "20 Acts of Kindness in 20 Days in 2020" fundraising event. The Skyline swimmers were handicapped by dragging along five-gallon buckets. Mayor Silvestrini surprisingly came in second among three swimmers (one of whom lost his five-gallon drag along the way). Click here for a video of the race. Meetings with the Mayor Fridays from 2-4pm have been set aside for citizens to meet with Mayor Silvestrini (socially distanced and masked, of course).
