08/12/22: MILLCREEK FOOD PANTRY; TAX INCREASE APPROVED; IRRIGATION WATER RIGHTS, etc. View this email in your browser Mayor Silvestrini and Promise Program Manager Kayla Mayers lookig over the outdoor classroom built this summer at Millcreek Elementary. Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS No upcoming meetings this week NEWS PROMISE PROGRAM SUPPORTS MILLCREEK ELEMENTARY MILLCREEK. Earlier this summer, Millcreek's Promise Program, together with other community partners, built an outdoor classroom at Millcreek Elementary School. Intended to get kids outside to experiment and learn about science, the classroom comes complete with box gardens. ---PAGE BREAK--- Produce from the box gardens will complement the school's Food Pantry, which was founded in 2002 as an Eagle Scout project by Anton Goodick of Troop 34 in partnership with the Granite Education Foundation. The Millcreek Promise Program supplied the pantry with its freezer, and has collaborated with the Granite Education Foundation and other community partners to keep it stocked. One of three food pantries in the Granite School District to stay open this summer, 10-20 more families per week utilize the Millcreek Elementary Food Pantry as they struggle in the face of rising prices on good, gas, housing, and daily basics. The Rev. Brigette Weier of Our Saviour's Luthern Church and Millcreek Elementary School Principal Amber Clayton, talk with community leaders about food insecurity in our neighborhoods. The congregation of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Holladay has been one of those community organizations that has been participating in keeping the shelves full. This week, their Reverend Brigette Weier organized a tour of the pantry for staff members from the offices of U.S. Representatives John Curtis, Burgess Owens, and Chris Stewart, and U.S. Senator Mitt Romney. They, together with Mayor Silvestrini and concerned community members, learned about how hunger affects children’s educational performance, the firsthand impact of inflation on families, and food insecurity in Utah. We encourage all who are able to please donate food or volunteer their time at the food pantry. Any help is greatly appreciated and will benefit Millcreek families in need. ---PAGE BREAK--- Please reach out to Granite Education Foundation to learn more and visit for volunteer opportunities. Many thanks to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Millcreek Elementary, Granite Education Foundation, Utah Food Bank, Voices for Utah Children, Bread for the World, and United Today Stronger Tomorrow for working diligently to ensure that no child goes hungry. You can read more about the tour in this KSL article. City Council Finds Way Forward to Pay for Increased Policing Costs MILLCREEK. At the conclusion of the Truth in Taxation hearing earlier this week, the Millcreek City Council approved a 4.61% property tax increase to help pay for the $2.5 million increase in this year's contract with the Unified Police Department. In addition, the City Council approved a budget that anticipates the implementation of a 6% Municipal Energy Sales & Use Tax (more commonly known as a franchise fee) effective in January 2023, and authorized expenditures of up to $500,000 from the city's fund balance (rainy day fund). There will be more engagement later this year concerning the adoption of the Municipal Energy Sales and Use Tax. The City Council is grateful for the Millcreek residents who sent emails ahead of the meeting, as well as those who attended the meeting and provided their comments on the proposal. The Council noted that this was a difficult decision, but this was a necessary change to maintain the level and quality of police services Millcreek has enjoyed. More information about why this decision was made can be found in the City's Property Tax Increase FAQs, or in the recording of this week's meeting. ---PAGE BREAK--- A Reminder of Irrigation Water Rights MILLCREEK.
